Mundine breaks down over fan's suicide story

Anthony Mundine has given a rare insight into his softer side, bursting into tears while revealing how he inadvertently saved a fan on the verge of suicide.

On Monday night's episode of 'I'm a Celeb', the Aussie boxer broke down recalling the sombre story.

“I saved this dude’s life. He was in a very bad, depressed state, right,” Mundine said.

“His daughter walked in. She was going hysterical, saying, ‘Dad, what are you doing? What are you doing?’ He said, ‘I need to go, I need to do this.’

“And she goes, ‘Well, what about Anthony Mundine?’ Because he always told her that he always wanted to meet me before he died.

"And then he goes, ‘Yep, that’s true daughter, we’re going to meet him.’ And from that moment, he came and met me.”

Mundine burst into tears as he reflected on what the moment meant to him.

“He said, ‘Your courage, your strength, helped me out of this dark place.’ That touched me, man. I know I’m doing something — something right.

“When I met him, he seemed good, you know. He seemed ... he turned the corner.”

Mundine has previously revealed how a man named Michael Dickie brought him to tears after his loss to Danny Green 12 months ago.

Mundine was seen crying in the ring after the bout, later saying his tears were because of something Dickie said to him beforehand, rather than because he lost.

“That wasn’t even about the fight, that’s the crazy thing. Don’t make it out like I’m crying and sooking about the fight, that wasn’t even about the fight,” Mundine told SEN radio at the time.

“My dear friend Michael Dickie — he’s one of my best fans from the get go, he’s been to pretty much every one of my fights — he embraced me and spoke with conviction. He said, ‘Man, you saved my life, you saved my life’.

“This guy went through depression, he was going to commit suicide.

“He said to me, ‘If it wasn’t for you Choc, I wouldn’t be here. You saved my life man’.

“When he said that to me I was like, ‘Damn, you got me man’. I couldn’t hold back the tears.”
