You'd be forgiven if you missed ROAD FC 31 on the weekend, a Korean-based amateur MMA event.

But what you missed was one of the most gruesome injuries of the year, in any sport.

Former UFC fighter George Roop suffered a sickening injury when his leg shattered after an attempted kick on opponent Yoon Jun Lee.

Roop threw a front kick to his opponent's body early in the first round and immediately staggered backwards.

It soon became clear that Roop had broken his leg after landing the kick, the referee stopping the fight after the American fell to the ground in agony.

Replays give a clearer indication of the horrific nature of the injury, and the sound his leg makes is just awful.

Roop was rushed to hospital and is expected to be sidelined for at least six months.
