MLB's new gold patch program honors 2024 award winners

Major League Baseball has found a new way to honor the game's best players and create a new collectable in the process.

Beginning this season, the league is bestowing a gold MLB patch on the jerseys of the reigning MVP, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year winners. That means Shohei Ohtani (MVP), Aaron Judge (MVP), Chris Sale (Cy Young), Tarik Skubal (Cy Young), Luis Gil (Rookie) and Paul Skenes (Rookie) will each sport the special logo all summer.

Following the season, the league will turn some of the patches into trading cards.

Per MLB.com's Thomas Harrigan:

These six players will wear the emblem on the back of their jerseys throughout 2025. Following the season, 10 authenticated game-worn patches from each player will be transformed into exclusive autographed Logoman trading cards. ...The Gold MLB Logo Patch promotion follows the Debut Patch initiative that launched at the beginning of the 2023 season. Those patches, which adorn a player's jersey during his MLB debut, are also authenticated by MLB and utilized in Topps trading cards.

The gold logos will also be present on all retail versions of each participating player's jersey.

It's a pretty cool way to honor the league's best players — and a nice bit of progress as MLB works to dismantle some of the long-held unwritten rules around celebrating achievements. We've often seen the reigning World Series champions add some gold trim to their jerseys in honor of their championship. It's nice to see individual players get more recognition for their efforts, too.
