Mitch Marsh's funny revelation about Travis Head amid epic World Cup celebrations

Mitchell Marsh has made the hilarious revelation that Travis Head might struggle to back up and play in the T20 series this week against India because of the celebrations after his World Cup final century. The Australian cricket stars have been enjoying the aftermath of their World Cup success having silenced the doubters and defeated India in the final.

Bizarrely, despite months overseas in 2023 for the Ashes and two campaigns in India, Australia are set to play the host nation in a T20 series starting this week. Fans have slammed the series for going ahead after a gruelling tournament for both teams as David Warner became the latest player to withdraw from the squad.

The series kicks off on Friday (just five days after the World Cup final), and has been widely panned as meaningless. Warner, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Marsh have all arrived home on Wednesday rather than playing in the series, and coach Andrew McDonald is also departing India for a break.

And Marsh has revealed Head has been basking in his World Cup winning century since the final and might struggle to back up on Friday. “They’re still going in India, so I’m looking forward to seeing what pans out over the next few days,” Marsh said to reporters on when they might all meet up and celebrate back in Australia.

“(Travis Head) is definitely in the votes … I’m not sure he’ll be playing that game (on Thursday). I’m no selector or coach, but if he plays that game it will be a miracle.” Cameron Green is also set to miss out on the series having been with the squad for a majority of 2023.

Head scored a century in the World Test Championship final against India and backed up the feat with a century in the World Cup final. It's fair to say Aussie fans won't hold it against him if enjoys his achievements with a break.

The 29-year-old still has more cricket left in 2023 with Australia's summer of cricket fast approaching. Head has proven to be one of Australia's most vital players in both formats of the game and was unfortunate to miss out on the ICC's Team of the Tournament with Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock earning the opening positions.

Cricket fans hit out over Australia's T20 series with India

The T20 series after the World Cup is one that had to be rescheduled due to the Covid pandemic, with contractual obligations meaning it must be played rather than scrapped. It theoretically marks the beginning of preparations for next year's T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies, however India's squad only includes three players who reached last year's semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in Australia (with Hardik Pandya still injured).

Former England captain Michael Vaughan wrote on social media last week: “It doesn’t sit right with me that the two finalists four days later will start a T20 series against each other. Why can’t we allow players the chance to have a moment’s rest after a WC or whoever wins the chance to celebrate properly for a couple of weeks.. It’s complete greed and overkill.”

Adam Zampa will stay with the squad and appears likely to also take part in the T20 series after leading the way for Australia with 23 wickets in the World Cup.
