Michael Slater joins Channel 7 cricket team

Former Australian Test batsman Michael Slater has joined the Channel 7 cricket team.

The news was revealed on Friday night, with the 48-year-old to commentate on the network’s Test cricket and Big Bash coverage.

“I’m thrilled to be joining Channel 7,” Slater said.

“I’ve been a long-time fan of their sports coverage, particularly live sport, and can’t wait to join the new team and help give Test cricket and the Big Bash a fresh look and approach.”

Seven won the television rights in April in partnership with Fox Sports, ending the sport’s long association with Channel Nine.

The six-year deal includes all home Test matches and 43 of the 59 Big Bash games as well as women’s international cricket and 23 women’s Big Bash games.

“We’re absolutely rapt to have Slats join our team,” head of cricket Dave Barham said.

“He is a class broadcaster who will bring experience to our Test coverage, and all his trade mark energy to our BBL.”

Slater was part of the Nine commentary team since 2006 and joins Ricky Ponting and Damien Fleming on Channel 7.
