Matildas striking the right mix

Australia Matildas Training Session

Matildas star Mary Fowler is confident her side has found the right balance between having “fun” and working hard as they prepare for the upcoming Olympics by playing reigning Asian Cup champions China in two friendly internationals.

The Matildas host China at Adelaide Oval on Friday night and again on Monday at Sydney’s Accor Stadium.

“We’re the kind of team that tries not to waste a single session,” Fowler said.

“Camp’s been really good so far. Everyone’s taking it seriously and trying to get the most out of it, while trying to have some fun as well, so I think we’re on our way.”

While China failed to qualify for the Olympics, Fowler was confident the Steel Roses – who are coached by former Matildas mentor Ante Milicic – would provide the Australians with a good idea of where their preparations for the Paris Games stood.

“It’s always nice for us to play different teams and have a good comparison for where we’re at, look at what we’re working on and see things that we’re doing really well or things we can improve on,” the Manchester City attacking midfielder said.

“It’s a good match for us to play in this camp, and we’re excited to see how we go.”

Fowler, 21, was happy to be back in Australia after completing the English Women’s Super League season with a City side that finished runners-up to Chelsea on goal difference.

“I miss being home. It’s always a good thing to come here and play in front of a home crowd,” she said.

“Everyone’s just excited to see each other, and get out there and play again.”
