Manchester United vs FC Twente LIVE! Europa League result, match stream and latest updates today

Christian Eriksen followed a ferocious finish with a costly mistake as Manchester United began the Europa League with a 1-1 draw against Erik ten Hag's former club FC Twente.

This was a continental campaign few expected the Red Devils to be embarking on having missed out on European qualification through the Premier League last term.

But May's shock FA Cup triumph against rivals Manchester City secured United a Europa League spot and they opened the new-look league phase in frustrating fashion against the Eredivisie side.

United boss Ten Hag spent a combined 23 years at Twente across three stints as a player and then in different coaching capacities, saying on the eve of the game: "It's not nice to have to hurt something you love."

Eriksen's first-half rocket put United on course to do just that, but the lowest-ranked side, in terms of UEFA's coefficient, heading to Old Trafford in this revamped group phase had other ideas.

Sam Lammers went close with an early strike and was not to be denied a famous Old Trafford goal, dispossessing Eriksen as the midfielder turned into danger and then all too easily beating Andre Onana in the second half.

Ten Hag critical of Man Utd side as Eriksen makes alarming admission

22:55 , Jonathan Gorrie

Erik ten Hag was critical of his Manchester United side after they slipped to a 1-1 draw with FC Twente in the Europa League.

Christian Eriksen opened the scoring but gave the ball away in a crucial area to allow Sam Lammers to equalise.

And Ten Hag pulled no punches in his assessment of United after the game, telling TNT Sports: "We kept them alive, 1-0 up, controlling the game you have to be consistent and keep going. In the second half we dropped the level, gave the goal away.

"We didn't finish it off, we had to go for the second goal and so they stay alive and we get punished with a mistake from ourselves.

Sam Lammers struck to deny Manchester United victory and earn FC Twente a 1-1 draw in the Europa League at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag eyes Champions League

19:48 , Jamie Dickenson

Erik ten Hag has set his sights on qualifying for the Champions League as his Manchester United side prepare to begin their Europa League campaign against FC Twente tonight.

"There are two routes [to qualify for the Champions League],” he told TNT Sports.

“Of course, we want to finish in the top four of the Premier League, but also, the Europa League is an opportunity to get into the Champions League next season, apart from winning a trophy.

"We have to rotate the players but also look at the opponent. There are so many aspects you are considering when you look at a line-up and pick a team. Tactics and load of the players.

"We're going forward, stepping up, we were very dominant on the ball [against Crystal Palace] and we hope to achieve the same today. Then being better out of possession.

"It was a good half definitely, we are happy with it, but we've played some other good games like against City in the FA Cup final and in the Community Shield we played well.

"They [Hojlund and Mount] are not 100 per cent fit, match fit, so we're happy Rasmus and Mason are back, which will help, and then we can rotate and do something in games."

McClaren in the building

19:41 , Jamie Dickenson

Steve McClaren is back in Manchester this evening as two of his old teams lock horns.

McClaren was a part of Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff at United for the last two seasons, but left the club to take up the Jamaica national team post in the summer.

The 63-year-old is well remembered at Twente after guiding them to the Eredivisie title in 2009/10.

Oosting believes

19:31

FC Twente boss Joseph Oosting believes his side can hurt Man United on the break tonight.

“I always believe in opportunities,” he said. “If we dare to play, we can also create opportunities. Especially in the transition, we can hurt Manchester.

“That is easier said than done but the will is definitely there. We played games against Red Bull (Salzburg, in the Champions League qualifying stage) that you learn from.

“Everything goes at the highest tempo, whether it is on the ball or in defence. You have to be top in everything and we need everyone to be there. I think we have also made progress in that.

“We have respect for Manchester United, but we also have the full conviction and the will to get the most out of the game.”

Ten Hag on Twente

19:26 , Jamie Dickenson

Erik ten Hag has spoken of his affection for FC Twente ahead of tonight’s game.

“I would have preferred a different opponent,” he said. “It's never nice to hurt someone or something you love.

“Of all the teams, Twente is the team I follow the most. I watch them as a fan, as a supporter, not as an analyst. It's a different way of watching their games.

“Twente brought me a lot, I was put through their academy, so for me there’s a great deal of history there.”

Rash return

19:15

Marcus Rashford has returned to the Manchester United starting line-up as Erik ten Hag makes three changes to the side that drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Ten Hag's Twente love affair

18:22 , Jamie Dickenson

Erik ten Hag had three spells as a player at FC Twente as well as a coaching role after hanging up his boots.

Ten Hag was primarily a centre-back during his playing days and started his career at the Dutch club, where he won the KNVB Cup in the 2000/01 season.

He retired from playing in 2002 at the age of 32 while playing for Twente and took up a coaching role in the club’s academy initially overseeing the Under-17 team.

He also coached the Under-19s until 2006, when he was promoted to assistant manager going on to work under Steve McLaren.

Yoro not mad on Real

18:07 , Jamie Dickenson

Leny Yoro says he picked Manchester United over Real Madrid as the Premier League giants are the bigger club.

The defender was being tracked by both European giants over the summer, and it surprised some to see the teenager end up at Old Trafford.

United reportedly offered selling club Lille far more than Madrid, along with a bumper wage package four times bigger than that on offer in Spain.

Asked by Rio Ferdinand why he picked United, Yoro said: "For me, man, it’s got the most history, it’s the biggest club in the world. And for me to play for United, even when I was young, it was the history, the fans, everything is big here.”

Man Utd team news

17:39 , Jamie Dickenson

Manchester United remain without four first-team defenders for tonight’s Europa League clash against FC Twente, but Manuel Ugarte is set to make his European debut for the club.

Erik ten Hag goes up against a side he had three spells with as a player, as United host Twente in their first of eight league-phase matches in the competition’s new format.

The United boss has confirmed that the squad available to him is the same as the one named for Saturday’s goalless draw with Crystal Palace.

Luke Shaw is one of those still on the sidelines, having not played for United since February, but Ten Hag is hopeful the left-back will return before next month’s international break.

“I think it’s probably [before the break] but I can’t say I'm 100 per cent sure,” Ten Hag said during his press conference on Tuesday.

“The plan is just to be back before but as I say I can’t say this 100 per cent for sure. It could also be shortly after the break.”

Victor Lindelof, Tyrell Malacia and Leny Yoro are all still unavailable.

Ugarte is likely to start, as he did in the big Carabao Cup win over Barnsley, and Marcus Rashford will also be desperate to return to the side, having been left out against Palace despite returning to goalscoring form.

Should Ten Hag opt to make further changes, Harry Maguire could come into the side, potentially to partner Matthijs de Ligt, while Casemiro is an option if either Kobbie Mainoo or Christian Eriksen are rested in midfield.

Rasmus Hojlund is available again after injury, but Ten Hag could be cautious in bringing him back into the starting lineup.

Predicted Man United XI (4-2-3-1): Onana; Dalot, De Ligt, Maguire, Mazraoui; Ugarte, Casemiro; Amad, Fernandes, Rashford; Zirkzee.
