Man City XI vs Newcastle: Confirmed team news, predicted lineup, injury latest for Premier League
Manchester City are expected to be without Jack Grealish and Manuel Akanji for Saturday’s Premier League clash at home to Newcastle.
Grealish and Akanji both picked up knocks in the first-half of Man City’s Champions League knockout phase playoff first-leg against Real Madrid on Tuesday night.
Speaking after the game, Pep Guardiola was unsure as to if either player would be available for next week’s second leg which makes them doubtful for the visit of Newcastle on Saturday.
“I don't know yet, but if they have gone out for muscular reasons, maybe they will not be there,” the Man City boss told reporters.
Akanji was used at right-back against Madrid so can make way for Rico Lewis or Matheus Nunes. Meanwhile, Guardiola has a number of options to replace Grealish.
Phil Foden is the most likely candidate having replaced the City no.10 in midweek, though Omar Marmoush will be pushing for a recall and Jeremy Doku could be in contention after being named on the bench last time out.
Perhaps with an eye on the Champions League second leg, Guardiola can rest Kevin De Bruyne, in particular, and hand a Premier League debut to deadline day signing Nico Gonzalez.
The Spaniard was an unused substitute against Madrid after being forced off early in the FA Cup fourth round win over Leyton Orient, but should be fit enough to start.
