Man City vs Man United - LIVE!

Amad Diallo struck a 90th-minute winner as Manchester United produced a stunning late comeback to beat Manchester City 2-1 and pile the misery on their rivals.

With 87 minutes on the clock, City were edging their way to a narrow victory in what was a derby clash hugely lacking in quality and bereft of excitement, with Josko Gvardiol’s first-half header the difference. But United came to life in the final stages, Bruno Fernandes equalising from the spot after Matheus Nunes gave the ball away and then compounded the error by conceding a penalty.

The celebrations had barely died down in the away end when Amad was then played in behind by Lisandro Martinez, and the winger took it past Ederson before squeezing a finish in from a tight angle. The late show from Fernandes and Amad left City stunned, and Pep Guardiola’s side have won just once in their last 11 matches.

Post-match thoughts from Amorim

19:07 , Matt Verri

The Man United boss says: "We were in the game for 90 minutes and that is very good. We talk about the Arsenal game, we played well in the first half but they were not believing that we could win. Today was so much more different.

"I also believe. Then we have Fergie time and we put the things together and something magic happened. It was a good day for us.

"They [the fans] need it. Just like us, but you can see the way they celebrate is special.”

What is going on at Man City?

18:48 , Matt Verri

One win in 11 matches. Nine points off Liverpool having played a game more.

Next up for Man City it’s a trip to Villa Park - hard to be confident that they will turn things around there.

Winning moment...

Some finish from Amad.

First touch was perfect, second one squeezed in the finish.

Mr Neville enjoyed it...

Just incredible.

A miserable match for 87 minutes, but United come alive late on to snatch all three points.

Fernandes equalised, Amad won it, and it’s one victory in 11 matches for City.

90+4 mins: Doesn’t look like it’s going to happen for City.

Passing it around in the United half but there’s no real threat.

Hold on though... Grealish’s cross is headed behind by Lindelof.

Amad on, Lindelof on. Amorim giving up with formations... everyone back.

MADNESS!

Amad gets in behind, first touch takes him past Ederson and he then squeezes in a volley with his second.

Incredible turnaround.

Man City 1-1 Man United

89 mins: Nunes looks distraught. His mistake to give the ball away and then he doubled up by conceding the penalty.

Savinho on for City, replacing Gundogan.

Fernandes makes no mistake from the spot!

What a gift for United.

PENALTY MAN UNITED!

18:20 , Matt Verri

WOW.

Terrible back-pass from Nunes, Amad gets there ahead of Ederson.

He is slowed down as he tries to go round the goalkeeper, but Nunes gets back and then brings the Man United winger down. So rash.

Man City 1-0 Man United

18:18 , Matt Verri

83 mins: Martinez the latest player to swing a cross into the City box.

Mainoo gets across Gvardiol and it’s a decent chance, but he sends the header well over the bar.

Man City 1-0 Man United

18:15

81 mins: Antony flicks a pass through to Amad, who can run at Nunes in the box.

He gets to the byline, tries to hammer the ball across the face of goal but it’s blocked.

Fernandes then takes a heavy touch and sends the ball straight out of play.

Man City 1-0 Man United

18:13 , Matt Verri

78 mins: Three United changes.

Antony, Zirkzee and Yoro are on, as Mazroui, Hojlund and De Ligt make way.

It will be Antony out at wing-back for the remainder of this match.

Man City 1-0 Man United

18:11 , Matt Verri

76 mins: Foden gets in behind, clipped cross is headed out to Kovacic.

He puts it back, drops for Haaland and his shot is deflected away for a corner.

Guardiola turns to his bench. Grealish replacing Doku.

Man City 1-0 Man United

18:08 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Feels like City have had a bit more control in the last five minutes or so, without threatening too much.

But Fernandes is clean through, after a lovely pass from Hojlund... WIDE!

Fernandes was onside, just Ederson to beat. Dinks a finish over Ederson but it trickles wide of the far post.

Man City 1-0 Man United

18:05 , Matt Verri

70 mins: Foden plays in Gundogan, who isn’t really the man City want leading the counter.

He turns back and it comes out to Doku, who skips to the byline and plays the ball across the face of goal. Just too much on it for Haaland.

Man City 1-0 Man United

18:02 , Matt Verri

68 mins: De Bruyne lashes over a strike from distance and that will be his final touch of the match.

He trudges off, Kovacic on in his place for the final 25 minutes or so.

Man City 1-0 Man United

18:01 , Matt Verri

67 mins: Ugarte comes across and clatters into Silva, as the Man City player looks to get his side on the attack.

Silva wanted a yellow card for that, but just a warning for Ugarte.

Kovacic is about to come on for the hosts, much-needed injury boost.

Man City 1-0 Man United

17:59 , Matt Verri

64 mins: Big United appeals for a penalty, as Hojlund goes down under a challenge from Dias.

There was a bit of contact, Dias didn’t get the ball. VAR not interested though.

Gary Neville, believe it or not, suggests Man United should have had a penalty.

Man City 1-0 Man United

17:57 , Matt Verri

63 mins: That’s more like it.

Fernandes with the cross, Amad flicks a header towards the far corner and Ederson is at full stretch to tip it behind.

Gvardiol wins the header ahead of De Ligt from the corner and City clear.

Man City 1-0 Man United

17:56 , Matt Verri

61 mins: Boos ringing out around the Etihad as United pass it around in defence. Might be from both sets of fans.

We could really do with something happening. Anything, anything at all.

Man City 1-0 Man United

17:54 , Matt Verri

59 mins: Nunes scoops a ball over the top, Haaland is very nearly clean through.

He stretched a leg out to bring it down, but even he couldn’t reach it. Been another quiet match for Haaland so far.

Man City 1-0 Man United

17:51 , Matt Verri

57 mins: Plenty of the ball for United, but they’re going nowhere. Every time they do move into the final third it breaks down.

Limited options on the bench for Amorim too, with Garnacho and Rashford left out.

Man City 1-0 Man United

17:48 , Matt Verri

54 mins: Another short corner, another terrible short corner.

City really haven’t been very good this afternoon. Good news for them is that they’re coming up a side who have been even worse.

Man City 1-0 Man United

17:47 , Matt Verri

53 mins: Silva with the nutmeg on Dalot which gets the fans going. Only problem is he’s nowhere near getting the ball on the other side.

City back on the attack, though, as United decide to play a free-kick straight back to them. Fernandes with the mistake.

Doku happy enough to win a corner for his side.

Man City 1-0 Man United

17:44 , Matt Verri

50 mins: Terrible pass from Doku and Fernandes can lead the United counter.

He plays it wide to Amad, who tries his luck from 25 yards out. Shot is charged down.

De Bruyne then runs straight into Martinez, it’s all a bit of a mess from both sides.

Man City 1-0 Man United

17:41 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Decent start to the half from United.

Mainoo twisting and turning in the box, trying to find space for the shot... he’s put out of his misery when the offside flag goes up.

Back underway!

17:39 , Matt Verri

Up and running in the second-half!

Keane hits out at Walker

17:35 , Matt Verri

Fair to say Roy Keane has some thoughts on that Kyle Walker ‘clash’ with Rasmus Hojlund.

The striker put his head on Walker’s and the right-back then threw himself to the ground very dramatically.

Keane says Walker should be “embarrassed” and, only half-jokingly, suggests he should have been sent off.

Gvardiol header the difference

17:26 , Matt Verri

City fortunate in how the ball deflected into the path of Gvardiol, but it’s really poor defending from United.

Conceded twice from corners against Arsenal, vulnerable again in the defeat to Nottingham Forest, and now this. It’s a big problem.

HT: Man City 1-0 Man United

17:23 , Matt Verri

That comes to nothing and it’s half-time at the Etihad.

It was a half largely lacking in quality, but a goal from set-piece is what splits them at the break. Gvardiol allowed to head home as the ball looped up to him in the box.

United have had promising moments in the attack, but nothing in terms of clear-cut chances.

Man City 1-0 Man United

17:22 , Matt Verri

45+4 mins: Moving closer and closer to the box. Free-kick just outside the area, and it’s played short and Martinez brings De Bruyne down.

The way United are defending set-pieces, not sure playing it short is the way to go.

Man City 1-0 Man United

17:21 , Matt Verri

45+3 mins: Corner for City in the final seconds of this half.

Comes after brilliant footwork from Foden, dancing away from the challenges and getting away a shot, which flicks off Maguire and behind.

Man City 1-0 Man United

17:19 , Matt Verri

45+2 mins: Ugarte with the foul this time, chance for De Bruyne to put a good ball in as City’s defenders stroll forward.

Or not - the Belgian loops it over everyone and straight out of play.

Man City 1-0 Man United

17:17 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Haaland shoves Ugarte off the ball, a bit too much of a shove for the referee. Midfielder went flying.

Half-time going to come just as this match has finally heated up. Four minutes added on.

Man City 1-0 Man United

17:15 , Matt Verri

43 mins: Onana off his line and makes a mess of clearing it.

De Bruyne with a very ambitious effort from near enough the touchline, 35 yards out. Can only clip the ball into Onana’s hands.

Man City 1-0 Man United

17:13 , Matt Verri

41 mins: From that free-kick, De Ligt wins the initial header and it’s scrambled away. City want a goal-kick, furious as United are awarded a corner.

City deal with it though, and Foden lumps the ball up the pitch.

Man City 1-0 Man United

17:12 , Matt Verri

39 mins: Hojlund got a shove from Walker and he reacted angrily.

The striker put his forehand on Walker’s face, and the City man then threw himself to the ground ridiculously.

VAR quickly clears it. It’s a yellow card for both of them.

Man City 1-0 Man United

17:10 , Matt Verri

38 mins: And it all kicks off basically straight from kick-off.

United win a free-kick and then both sets of players come together, it’s all get very heated.

Walker is on the floor holding his face. Looked to be Hojlund he clashed with.

GOAL! Man City 1-0 Man United | Josko Gvardiol 36'

17:09 , Matt Verri

CITY TAKE THE LEAD!

United just cannot defend set-pieces. Taken short, De Bruyne’s deflected cross loops up and Gvardiol is free to power a header past Onana.

Man City 0-0 Man United

17:07 , Matt Verri

35 mins: Amad appears to be United’s best bet.

His driving run leads to Mainoo being found in the middle, comes back to Amad and his effort is blocked.

Silva tries to break for City, Fernandes slides in and halts his progress. Not sure how he’s avoided a booking there.

Man City 0-0 Man United

17:04 , Matt Verri

32 mins: Here we go, chance for United to break as Fernandes plays in Amad. Space for the visitors.

But again they take too long to make the decisions. Martinez’s shot is blocked, before Ugarte whips an effort of his own miles wide. Woeful.

Man City 0-0 Man United

17:03 , Matt Verri

31 mins: There is basically nothing happening.

Both sides knock it around at the back with no real pace, eventually get bored of that and then lose it when they move forward.

Man City 0-0 Man United

17:01 , Matt Verri

28 mins: Really nervous feel to this match. Not much confidence in either camp.

Silva tries to make something happen, drifting into the box, but Fernandes slides in to poke the ball away from him.

Man City 0-0 Man United

16:58 , Matt Verri

26 mins: Massive chance... but it wouldn’t have counted anyway.

Ugarte slides a great pass through to Amad, clean through on goal but he sends the finish into the side-netting.

Offside flag raised.

Man City 0-0 Man United

16:55 , Matt Verri

23 mins: Much more like it from City. Foden with the dummy, Haaland rolls it back into his path and the shot is deflected behind for a corner.

Swung in by Foden, Dias allowed to get up in the six-yard box but he can’t keep the header down.

Man City 0-0 Man United

16:53 , Matt Verri

21 mins: We do get a shot! Spoiling us.

Dalot’s header out only finds Foden on the edge of the box, and he lashes a volley just wide of the near post. Onana didn’t move.

Man City 0-0 Man United

16:52 , Matt Verri

20 mins: There has not been a single shot yet. For either side. Not one. I’m at least 80% sure we’ll get one at some point.

City try and change that as Haaland makes the run in behind, but he’s not picked out.

Man City 0-0 Man United

16:50 , Matt Verri

18 mins: Dr Bruyne slides a nice pass through to Foden, he dinks it into the middle but Maguire gets there before Haaland.

City starting to look a bit more dangerous on the ball, but it’s all still very slow.

Man City 0-0 Man United

16:47 , Matt Verri

15 mins: Fernandes has moved into that more advanced role on the left, with Mainoo slotting in alongside Ugarte.

Wouldn’t say it’s been a game of huge quality so far. Or any quality.

Man City 0-0 Man United

16:45 , Matt Verri

13 mins: This is a huge blow for Mount.

He’s sat down off the ball, looks like his match is over already. Picked up another injury problem and he looks devastated.

Mainoo getting ready to come on and replace him, as Amorim calls his players over for a quick team talk.

Man City 0-0 Man United

16:43 , Matt Verri

11 mins: United have had basically all of the ball in the last five minutes. Good spell for them, settled nicely.

Amad drives into the box, cutting onto his left foot but everyone knows the offside flag is coming and eventually it’s raised.

Man City 0-0 Man United

16:41 , Matt Verri

9 mins: After a fairly quick start to the match, it’s died right now.

United controlling the ball in defence at walking pace, no interest in getting it forward quickly.

Fernandes keen to keep telling his team-mate to calm things down. Clearly the plan.

Man City 0-0 Man United

16:39 , Matt Verri

6 mins: First chance for United to attack, City have left the entire left wing open for them.

Dalot comes strolling forward, only Hojlund to pick out in the middle and his cross is comfortable claimed by Ederson.

Promising signs though for United - so much space in transition out wide.

Man City 0-0 Man United

16:37 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Foden takes it short, De Bruyne’s cross when it does come in is charged down.

One day someone will score from a short corner.

Man City 0-0 Man United

16:37 , Matt Verri

4 mins: Chaotic few seconds in midfield, looks to be about five different fouls before Anthony Taylor remembers he has a whistle.

De Bruyne whips a great ball to the back post, Haaland has parked himself on Martinez but the defender does well to nod it away for a corner.

Man City 0-0 Man United

16:34 , Matt Verri

2 mins: It is indeed Nunes at left-back for Man City, up against Amad. United have to target that match-up.

Hosts are dominating the ball but United are pressing right up the pitch. Aggressive start from Amorim’s side.

KICK-OFF!

16:32 , Matt Verri

Up and running in the Manchester derby!

16:29 , Matt Verri

City have spent the last few minutes basically repeating over and over that they’ve won the title four times in a row.

And that’s followed by the usual boos as the Premier League anthem then plays out.

Here we go!

16:26 , Matt Verri

Lights have been turned off, banners going up around the Etihad. Fans doing their best to get the atmosphere going.

Over to the players now to deliver on their part of the equation - they’re in the tunnel now.

Man City have key duo available

16:21 , Matt Verri

Incredibly, this is the first time that Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne have started a match together this season.

Jeremy Doku fit too, Bernardo Silva floating around and Erling Haaland leading the line... for all City’s problems, goals shouldn’t be one of them here.

Not long now!

16:13 , Matt Verri

Kick-off just over 15 minutes away at the Etihad, warm-ups nearly done.

These sides have been so poor recently, it is pretty difficult to know what to expect this afternoon.

Goals, if their defending is anything to by...

Nunes to start at left-back

16:06 , Matt Verri

Pep Guardiola has confirmed that it will be Matheus Nunes at left-back for Man City this afternoon.

Bernardo Silva has played there before, but Nunes is the one called upon to do a job for the hosts.

He’s likely to be up against Amad Diallo on that wing - not easy at all.

Gundogan tells Man City how to return to form

16:00 , Matt Verri

Ilkay Gundogan insists Man City “know exactly what’s going wrong”, but fixing the problem is proving more difficult.

The City midfielder said: “We sometimes, one action we miss the ball, lose a duel and you see that we drop immediately, lose the rhythm, they are able to break our rhythm with the easiest of things. They don't even need to do much

"You have to do the simple things as good as possible. Work hard again, this is how you get confidence back, even in the game if you miss something, by doing small and simple things you get confidence back at the moment we are always doing the wrong things.

"I feel like we know exactly what's going wrong. If you look at the most part of games even today we actually didn’t play bad, created chances, just missed to score, in these kind of games if you give away once chance it's not easy to bounce back.”

More from the Man United boss

Fair to say Ruben Amorim is making it clear he won’t accept a drop in standards...

Amorim explains shock absences

15:44 , Matt Verri

Ruben Amorim has been speaking ahead of kick-off, explaining his decision to leave Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho out of the squad.

The pair trained this morning and are not injured.

Amorim says: “We try to evaluate everything training performance, game performances, engagement with teammates, push their teammates up. Everything is on the line when we analyse and try to choose the players. It is my selection. Simple.

“I don’t want to send a message it is simply an evaluation and they know it. The players are really, really smart. Everybody understands my decision and I have to choose. It is simple selection.

“Of course the context is difficult because we have to win games and we have a difficult situation now. I pay attention to everything, the way you eat, the way you put your clothes to go to a game. Everything. I make my evaluation and then I decide.

“There is a communication after the last training. They are alright. They had training this morning and I was there. They trained really well.”

How it stands...

15:37 , Matt Verri

Victory for Manchester City would take them to within six points of league leaders Liverpool, though they would have played a game more.

As for Ruben Amorim’s side, they sit 13th in the table. Even a win here would only move them up a place, and that could change again when Tottenham play Southampton this evening.

Man United duo miss out on squad

15:27 , Matt Verri

Big news for Manchester United is that Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho are not even on the bench.

No confirmation yet as to why that is - surely has to be injury related.

Mason Mount and Amad Diallo start behind Rasmus Hojlund, while Harry Maguire is preferred to Leny Yoro.

Guardiola improvises!

15:22 , Matt Verri

Well... there’s not many defenders in that Man City lineup.

Could be a back-four with Nunes or Bernardo at left-back, or maybe a back-three with a couple of players out of position at wing-back.

Either way, Guardiola has been forced to get creative, with Stones only fit enough for the bench.

Foden does start for City, that is a rare bit of positive injury news.

Carragher: United should consider selling Fernandes

15:07 , Matt Verri

Jamie Carragher has suggested Manchester United should sell Bruno Fernandes, believing the club captain will leave Ruben Amorim “tearing his hair out”.

There has unsurprisingly been plenty of talk about upcoming transfer windows already at United, as Amorim looks to overhaul the squad, but is believed that the club must sell to raise funds for any squad rebuild.

“Fernandes has been one of United’s best players during a tough period and would have shone with more quality around him during his Old Trafford career,” Carragher said.

“But he is 30 now and there may be value in offloading him to raise funds. Amorim may see it differently and believe a few more years of Fernandes alongside shrewd additions will serve the team better.

“Selling must be a consideration, however, because Fernandes is one of the few players who can attract a significant fee if profitability and sustainability rules are an issue.

“I’ve always felt Fernandes is a great talent rather than a great player. He creates a lot of chances but can be very indisciplined with and without the ball. That makes it a lot harder for United to defend as a compact unit as he chases the ball all over the pitch.

“It looks like great commitment to the supporters but the manager will be tearing his hair out.”

Amorim plays down Man City rumours

14:56 , Matt Verri

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has played down suggestions he was close to joining Manchester City.

Amorim had built a reputation as one of the most exciting young managers in European football during his time with the Lisbon giants, ending their 19-year wait for a league title back in 2021.

West Ham held talks with him earlier this year, while Liverpool were linked with a move following Jurgen Klopp’s departure.

Hugo Viana, who worked with Amorim at Sporting, was named as Txiki Begiristain’s successor as City’s sporting director in October and was reportedly interested in bringing him to the Etihad Stadium if Pep Guardiola left at the end of the current season.

Amorim, however, soon joined United while Guardiola signed a two-year contract extension at City.

Asked about the links with City, Amorim said: “I never had [conversations]. This was my only option.

"When Manchester United talked to me, I have no doubts because I already had something in my mind that it could be a possibility."

Stewards are in a bit earlier than necessary...

Amad and Hojlund make up

14:35 , Matt Verri

Amad Diallo looks to have played down his bust-up with Rasmus Hojlund as Manchester United prepare to face their rivals.

The Red Devils’ hard-fought 2-1 come-from-behind win over Czech side Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League on Thursday night was overshadowed by a heated row that occurred between the two players following the full-time whistle at Doosan Arena.

Amad and Hojlund engaged in an animated discussion on the pitch after both players appeared to fail to play in the other during promising attacks that took place just seconds apart late in second-half stoppage time.

"Yes (I was aware of that), and for me it's perfect," Amorim said after the match.

"You know, in this moment we need to feel something. If we need to fight each other, it's like a family. For me it's a very, very good sign. We need to feel something and that is important.”

He added: "That is clear [how much both players care]. When you don't care, you don't do nothing. When you care, you fight with your brother, with your father, with your mother. For me, it's a very good sign.

"If I see it is too much, I will go inside the dressing room. But it's their space, they have to talk, to fight and, again, for me it's a very important thing."

Both Amad and Hojlund appeared to stay quiet on their row after the game, but the former has now reached out on Instagram by posting a picture of the duo from the game on his stories and tagging his team-mate along with a heart emoji.

Man City players in danger of suspension

14:26 , Matt Verri

Any player shown five yellow cards across the first half of the season will serve a one-match suspension.

Unhelpfully for Guardiola, several City stars are close to that mark. Bernardo Silva is on four ahead of the frantic festive fixture schedule, while defenders Manuel Akanji (injured for Sunday) and Ruben Dias are on three.

Rico Lewis will miss Sunday’s clash against Manchester United following the red card he was shown at Crystal Palace for two bookable offences.

Earlier this season...

14:17 , Matt Verri

The Manchester clubs met right at the start of the season in the Community Shield.

Bernardo Silva struck late to send it to penalties, where it was locked at 6-6 until Jonny Evans stepped up with a truly terrible spot-kick. Not really his job, to be fair.

Manuel Akanji made no mistake to seal victory for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Standard Sport prediction

14:08

It’s often said that the form book goes out of the window for a derby game. That was evident in last season’s FA Cup final as United surprised many by leaving Wembley with the trophy.

The issue is that neither side is in particularly great form at the moment, but Amorim’s win over Guardiola earlier in the campaign could be key as United have the players to hit City where it hurts.

Manchester United to win, 2-1.

Man United team news

13:58 , Matt Verri

Ruben Amorim has some big selection calls ahead of his first Manchester derby.

Mason Mount is pushing for a start after impressing off the bench when Manchester United came from behind to beat Viktoria Plzen 2-1 in the Europa League on Thursday.

Jonny Evans has resumed training and may come back into contention, but Leny Yoro or Noussair Mazraoui are set to start as the left centre-back.

Matthijs de Ligt has started every game under Amorim and is set to continue in the middle of the back-three, with Lisandro Martinez also likely to retain his place.

Rasmus Hojlund will hope to lead the line after his brace against Plzen and Andre Onana will continue in goal despite his shaky displays.

Luke Shaw remains sidelined but Amorim has no fresh injury concerns.

Man City team news

13:50 , Matt Verri

Manchester City’s availability crisis means Pep Guardiola will need to get creative for the Manchester derby.

Rico Lewis is suspended and City are without the injured John Stones, Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji, meaning Guardiola has only three senior defenders available.

Guardiola has said he may need to use midfielders as makeshift full-backs or wing-backs.

“I don't know what I have to do,” said the City boss.

“Maybe some winger has to play as a full-back or Matheus [Nunes] as a full-back, or maybe can play five at the back with wing-backs as wingers.”

Phil Foden and Mateo Kovacic returned to the City squad for Wednesday’s 2-0 Champions League defeat to Juventus but it seems unlikely either will come back into the starting XI.

Kevin De Bruyne has seemingly answered any questions over his fitness with three successive starts.
