Manchester City v Arsenal LIVE: Result and final score as John Stones breaks defiant 10-man Gunners

Manchester City and Arsenal shared a furious and dramatic 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium after John Stones’ 98th minute equaliser.

City took the lead when Erling Haaland struck early in the game and the champions looked in full control. But the game unravelled for Pep Guardiola’s side, first when Rodri came off injured on 20 minutes, and then when Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori swept home a stunning equaliser.

Gabriel then rose to power home a head and give Arsenal a 2-1 lead heading into half-time, but moments before the break the Gunners were reduced to 10 men in unusual circumstances when Leandro Trossard first clattered into City’s Bernardo Silva and then kicked the ball away in frustration.

City spent the entire second half attacking and left it very, very late to finally get the goal that denied 10-man Arsenal a huge victory.

Rodri injury: Latest news, return date and what Pep Guardiola said on Man City blow

12:11 , Jamie Braidwood

Manchester City are sweating on the fitness of Rodri after the influential midfielder limped off their 2-2 draw against Arsenal on Sunday.

The European champion with Spain and Ballon d’Or contender was replaced in the 20th minute of the contest at the Etihad after appearing to hurt his right knee.

Rodri was pivotal as City won a fourth consecutive Premier League title last campaign and, for club and country, has just one defeat in the last 18 months.

The 28-year-old is set to undergo a scan on the injury early this week and Pep Guardiola was concerned following the fiery draw against title rivals Arsenal.

Erling Haaland provokes Mikel Arteta with two-word message during fiery handshake

11:25 , Jamie Braidwood

Erling Haaland told Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to “stay humble” in a fiery post-match handshake after Manchester City rescued a 2-2 draw in a heated clash at the Etihad.

Haaland slapped Arteta on the back as he told the Arsenal boss to “stay humble, eh, stay humble” after the full-time whistle.

Arteta turned around to face Haaland after hearing the comment and stared at the Norwegian striker, but then walked away.

Bernardo Silva and Man City players taunt Arsenal over lack of trophies

10:54 , Jamie Braidwood

Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva appeared to mock rival Arsenal players over their lack of trophies - before taking aim at the Gunners’ tactics during the fiery 2-2 draw in the Premier League on Sunday.

Silva accused Arsenal of “dark arts” and said Mikel Arteta’s side wasted time as they held on with 10 men after Leandro Trossard was sent off on the stroke of half time. City equalised through John Stones in the 98th minute.

Afterwards, both teams clashed in the middle of the pitch with Silva appearing to taunt Arsenal’s lack of trophies by forming a ‘0’ with his thumb and forefinger and holding it towards defender Gabriel.

Pep Guardiola on emerging rivalries

06:00 , Sonia Twigg

He told Sky Sports: “We have created a good rivalry with Arsenal. Before it was with (former Liverpool boss) Jurgen (Klopp) and now it’s there, so it’s a different way.

“We started the game how we started, a little bit delayed after two seconds, and there were many things. They have personality, but we have too.

“Many things happened, but at the end we equalised, which we deserved.”

Pep Guardiola was convinced his side deserved their late equaliser.

Mikel Arteta on Leandro Trossard’s red card

05:00 , Sonia Twigg

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta was unhappy over Trossard’s second yellow card, but declined to elaborate.

He said: “It’s not my job to come here and judge what happened. My job is to survive in the most difficult environment you can be thrown into in football for 55 minutes and try to get things done to survive. That was my job.

“The rest is out of my job and it is already the second time it has happened in five games, which is really, really worrying if you want to see the best Premier League.”

No one can doubt Arsenal’s spirit, but questions remain about their credentials

04:00 , Sonia Twigg

A draw that felt like a defeat for Arsenal in the moment, and from a match - and especially a climax - that certainly didn’t feel like a mere Premier League match in September. Everyone knew the stakes were much higher.

Through that, it actually felt like a Champions League semi-final, and occasionally looked like one, too. Specifically, Jose Mourinho’s Internazionale against Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona in 2009-19.

Unlike that famous match, the Catalan this time got the late goal he desperately desired. Manchester City showed their admirable spirit, that has carried this squad through a lot of controversies over the past few years. This game was the very best of the Premier League in purely football terms, even if it was underscored by all manner of modern football issues. The very consequence of the result could be changed by the hearing. City insist upon their innocence. The actual team plays on through it, as Guardiola has instilled them with this relentlessness.

ARSENAL

DAVID RAYA: Just days after his Champions League heroics against Atalanta, produced a string of important saves. 9

JURRIEN TIMBER: Another impressive showing from the defender, who shone at Tottenham last week. 8

WILLIAM SALIBA: Quietly assured throughout, keeping his head during intense pressure. 8

GABRIEL: Looked a little rattled during City’s rapid start but regained his composure, with the set-piece star powering Arsenal ahead from a corner. Defended brilliantly in the second half. 9

RICCARDO CALAFIORI: A difficult afternoon could have been in store after losing Savinho before Haaland’s opener, but he levelled with a stunning strike. The summer signing defended resolutely. 8

THOMAS PARTEY: Positioning slightly off in the first half, irking some Arsenal staff. But kept his cool and helped batten down the hatches. 7

DECLAN RICE: Back after serving a one-game ban, he kept things ticking over in midfield and showed his defensive qualities. 8

BUKAYO SAKA: Arsenal’s skipper for the day, his fine corner brought Gabriel’s goal. Trossard’s sending off saw him withdrawn at the break. 7

GABRIEL MARTINELLI: Provided assist for Calafiori’s exquisite effort and gave Walker a torrid time in the first half. Remained diligent when defence became the order of the day. 7

LEANDRO TROSSARD: One of three changes at the Etihad Stadium, the busy forward was booked for clipping Savinho and sent off for kicking the ball away after barging into Bernardo Silva. 5

KAI HAVERTZ: Not at his attacking best but a solid performer with Arsenal’s backs against the wall. 7

SUBS:

BEN WHITE (for Saka, 46): Brought on to help firm up the backline following Trossard’s sending off, making a back three and helping keep City at bay. 7

JAKUB KIWIOR (for Calafiori, 74): Fresh legs in a backline tested mentally and physically. 7

John Stones: Clever or dirty, we know what to expect from Arsenal

02:00 , Sonia Twigg

Manchester City’s saviour John Stones said Arsenal have become one of the hardest teams to face because Mikel Arteta’s side are so adept at using the darker arts of the game.

Arsenal used every trick in the book as they hung on to a 2-1 lead for virtually the entire second half with 10 men after Leandro Trossard was sent off for kicking the ball away.

But substitute Stones popped up in the eighth minute of stoppage time to equalise and preserve City’s near two-year unbeaten run at home in the Premier League.

It was a huge relief for City who returned to the top of the table, two points ahead of rivals Arsenal who slipped to fourth.

In truth, City looked woefully short of ideas as Arsenal played with 10 men behind the ball, their usual slick passing game bogged down by Arsenal’s red wall.

“They’ve done it for a few years, and we know to expect that,” defender Stones, who played more like a centre forward when he came on, told Sky Sports.

“You can call it clever or dirty, whichever way you want to put it, they break up the game and obviously upset the rhythm for everyone. They use it to their advantage.

“I thought we dealt with it really well. It’s not easy. When those things are happening, you’re trying to gain momentum. You’re trying to get a foot into the game and get above them.

“Those little stoppages stop that. We controlled our emotions really well.”

MANCHESTER CITY

EDERSON: Could do nothing to stop Riccardo Calafiori’s opener and may well feel aggrieved that a block on him for Gabriel’s header was not called. 6 (out of 10)

KYLE WALKER: His second start of the campaign began poorly, although he was justified in being annoyed that a quick free-kick was allowed to be taken with him out of position. Improved in the second half. 5

RUBEN DIAS: A solid defensive option that became part of a 10-man attack. Guilty of some poor, desperate shots. 6

MANUEL AKANJI: Another pushed all the way up in search of a leveller. Moved the ball well. 7

JOSKO GVARDIOL: Not as effective as he can be but did little wrong. 6

RODRI: Looked to have picked up a potentially nasty injury in an innocuous coming together with Thomas Partey in the opening period. 5

ILKAY GUNDOGAN: Brought in for just his second start of the season, he struck the outside of the post with a free-kick. Popped up everywhere. 6

SAVINHO: Brilliantly burst away from Calafiori before slipping Haaland in to open the scoring in the ninth minute. A livewire that was blunted after the break. 7

BERNARDO SILVA: A thorn in Arsenal’s side whose movement between the lines proved a nuisance. 7

JEREMY DOKU: Looked livelier after a quiet first half, but could not find a way past Arsenal’s low block. 6

ERLING HAALAND: Clocked up his 100th goal for the club in a blistering start and was a physical presence, but service was largely lacking against a miserly backline. 7

SUBS:

MATEO KOVACIC (for Rodri, 21): A fine midfielder unable to truly make his mark. 6

PHIL FODEN (for Doku, 70): Brought on to spark a comeback but toiled like his team-mates. 6

JOHN STONES (for Walker, 78): A fresh pair of legs that finally found the breakthrough at the death. 7

JACK GREALISH (for Savinho, 78): A creative force that was mostly nullified. 6

Riccardo Calafiori scored on his full debut

Monday 23 September 2024 00:01 , Sonia Twigg

Calafiori told Sky Sports: “This is a high-level game - it’s the Premier League and especially against Man City, but we did well. We deserved more, I think.”

Asked about his spectacular strike, the Italy international added: “I don’t have anything to say. It was a really good strike and I was so happy to help the team.

“At the end, we didn’t win the game, so I’m a bit sad and disappointed as well.”

Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori, whose goal dragged the visitors back into the game, felt they deserved more from it.

Kyle Walker frustrated by Arsenal equaliser

Sunday 22 September 2024 23:15 , Sonia Twigg

City captain Kyle Walker was frustrated about the Arsenal equaliser, having been left out of position after being called for a chat by referee Michael Oliver.

He told Radio 5 Live: “I’m not ever going to come on national TV, national radio and start slagging people off because there’s enough of that going on around in the world.

“What I’m saying is I’ve not gone over to the referee. Me and Bukayo (Saka) have not gone over to the referee - he’s called us over. So if I’m being called over to the referee, he then should wait and allow me to get back in position before the ball is then gone over my head.

“So if I go over to the referee by my own accord and I’m out of position, it’s my fault. But I’m in position, he’s called the two captains obviously to calm the players down. I’m walking back saying ‘Lads, concentrate, nothing stupid, make sure we get through this.’ The ball is then going over my head.

“Me and Mike have a very good relationship and I think he has a very hard job, especially at the top level. So that’s not me being critical of him. I know he has a hard enough job, he’s got 22 angry players screaming at him continuously.

“If he calls me over, if I go over of my own accord, fair enough. But for him to call both captains over and then not let me get back in position. If I was a goalkeeper, does he let me get back in my net? Of course. I’m a defender, I’m the first line of defence he should let me get back in and be set and then blow the whistle.”

Roy Keane reacts to Leandro Trossard red card

Sunday 22 September 2024 22:45 , Sonia Twigg

Roy Keane had a strong reaction to Trossard’s red card that forced Arsenal to completely change their tactics: Roy Keane discussing Leandro Trossard’s second yellow, said on Sky Sports: “If you’re on a yellow card, you try not to give the referee another chance to give you another yellow. He’s given the perfect opportunity.

“He has kicked the ball away, it’s not even a debate, you don’t need to watch it 30 times. He’s wrong, it’s a second yellow and it’s the height of stupidity.”

Rodri injury latest

Sunday 22 September 2024 22:15 , Sonia Twigg

Guardiola will be concerned that Rodri may have caused a recurrence of the hamstring injury he picked up at Euro 2024, which saw him miss the start of City’s season.

After the match Guardiola said he did not know the nature of the injury.

Manchester City rocked by Rodri injury

Sunday 22 September 2024 21:45 , Sonia Twigg

So many things happened in the match, but the injury to Rodri could have long-lasting implications for the club:

Manchester City were hit by a major blow in the first half of their Premier League title showdown with Arsenal when Rodri limped off with an injury.

Rodri, who has become a cornerstone of both City and Spain’s success in recent seasons and has propelled himself into the conversation for the Ballon d’Or, went down under minimal contact in the box, in what seemed to be an innocuous moment in the game.

After a lengthy break for treatment, Rodri was helped off the field by City physios, grimacing and signalling to manager Pep Guardiola that he needed to be replaced. Mateo Kovacic came on in his place.

Mikel Arteta ‘proud’ of Arsenal

Sunday 22 September 2024 21:15 , Sonia Twigg

Arteta told Sky Sports: “I am so proud of the team. We played the game in a difficult context. Playing against the best team in the world.

“After what happened we went 2-1 up - it was a different story and I prefer not to make any comment about that [Leandro Trossard’s red card].

“Obviously, it is already a miracle we played 56 minutes at the Etihad with 10 men. It is unbelievable what we have done.

“It is obvious what happened when they made that decision, but it doesn’t deserve my comment. I don’t want to ruin anything else off the pitch.”

Guardiola reveals whether he would have used the same tactics in Arsenal’s position

Sunday 22 September 2024 20:45 , Sonia Twigg

Guardiola told Sky Sports: “The most important thing in the second half is we didn’t conceded fouls. Because they wanted to stop the game, stop the game. I don’t know how many went down with cramp because it was such a demanding game. But we didn’t concede fouls and fouls with deliberate action.

“It was difficult because you can create and cross in the box but they have Calafiori, Ben White, Saliba, Thomas Partey, Declan Rice, Gabriel, it was difficult. There were ten players there.

“But we were so patient, right, left, right, left to find the shots and the actions. Raya made incredible saves, but we got what we deserved.

“Maybe I would have done the same [as what Arsenal did in the second half]. You have to ask to Mikel what are the tactics. But it was a long ball from Raya to Havertz who showed unbelievable strong, the second balls they go really well for them in front and behind.”

Arteta refuses to comment on Trossard red card

Arsenal’s 10-man masterclass didn’t beat Manchester City – but it might have changed the title race

Sunday 22 September 2024 19:36 , Sonia Twigg

It was the last kick of a ball by a Manchester City player, John Stones latching on to the rebound after Jakub Kiwior had flung himself into the path of Mateo Kovacic’s shot, just beating the heroic David Raya. Arsenal were seconds away from a statement win, from a seismic victory. Instead, a 98th-minute goal extended City’s unbeaten run at home to 48 games. Their gap to Arsenal remained at two points. After extraordinary drama, nothing changed. And yet, at various points, in different ways, it felt as though everything had.

As Arsenal’s previous trip to the Etihad Stadium brought a 0-0 draw, the scoreline may not suggest they produced a defensive masterclass. Yet they did: a magnificent rearguard action almost brought the ultimate reward, in the sort of result that would reshape a season. As it was, they channelled the spirit of George Graham’s sides in an epic display of obduracy, only to receive a reminder that even when City feel uninspired – and perhaps because Arsenal made them look uninspired – they still had not killed them off.

Pep Guardiola reacts to the match

Sunday 22 September 2024 19:23 , Sonia Twigg

Guardiola said to Sky Sports: “A lot of things happened in the game, we have time to analyse it after. We have created a good rivalry with Arsenal. It was before with Jurgen [Klopp], now it’s in different way. You know how we started, it was a little bit delayed after two seconds.

“They have a lot of personality but we have it. Ninety-nine points to play. That’s life. We equalised, we deserved it.

“After there was injury, interruptions. We made a good build-up because it’s not so easy because they’re so good. To be able to score two goals against Arsenal is not easy.”

John Stones on Arsenal’s defending

Sunday 22 September 2024 19:03 , Sonia Twigg

When asked about Arsenal’s defending, Stones said: “I wouldn’t say they’ve mastered it. They’ve been doing it for a few years. You can call it clever and dirty, whichever way you call it, it upsets the rhythm for everyone. They use it for their advantage. We controlled our emotions really well.

“What everyone expects watching a big game like this is there’s drama and whether you’re involved in it, you want to be level-headed and not make silly yellow cards.

“They made it difficult for us being so deep and having so many people around the box. It will be something we have to review.

“For the past few years, there’s been a rivalry that’s been growing. One where we’ve always wanted to be on top. We’ve got one, we wanted three. But we came away with a vital point is something we should be proud of.”

‘No overlaps, no underlaps’: Roy Keane tears into Manchester City after draw against Arsenal

Sunday 22 September 2024 19:02 , Sonia Twigg

Keane said on Sky Sports: “It has happened before where teams can get a result with ten men. Listen, Arsenal did well but City were really poor - no movement, no overlaps, no underlaps.

“It was more poor play from Manchester City than Arsenal’s brilliant defending.”

While his fellow pundit Micah Richards was praising Arsenal’s defending: “Man City will be disappointed in the way that they played in that second half.

“I thought Gabriel and Saliba were unbelievable to defend like that for 45 minutes in the second half, against the best team in the league, it was just remarkable.”

Sunday 22 September 2024 18:57 , Sonia Twigg

John Stones: “I was (delighted). I obviously frustrated that you don’t get to start in these big games, before the game I tried to channel it and have a positive attitude if needed to come on.

“Over the years we’ve worked hard to stick together no matter who is playing. I came in and tried to be inside the box for all crosses and one dropped to me and I put it in the back of the net.”

He added: “He brought me on to play close to Erling (Haaland) and help with aerial duels.

“I’m really pleased to score a goal like that.”

Leandro Trossard’s red card forced Arsenal to go defensive, and they almost managed to keep out City, but after stoppage time had run out, Stones managed to level the tie and ensure the home side’s record at the Etihad would not be broken.

52 minutes: Arsenal are very compact, they are looking to get stuck in and I wouldn’t be surprised if they started to look to counter-attack.

Manchester City 1-2 Arsenal

49 minutes: Moments later there’s another chance, the ball falls to Kovacic just outside the area. He takes it on, but the ball sails way over the bar.

The crowd are getting frustrated at the time Raya is taking for the subsequent goal kick.

47 minutes: Haaland has a header, it’s the first real chance of the second half, but the centre-back just does enough for it to be difficult for the City forward, and it goes straight into the hands of Raya.

Update from Richard Jolly:

An extraordinary first half at the Etihad, capped by Leandro Trossard's red card. Further incident at the start of the second, with Bukayo Saka withdrawn and Ben White coming on. Arsenal seem to be playing 5-4-0 now.

Trossard red card pundit reaction on Sky Sports:

Theo Walcott: “We’ve been here before this season. You kick the ball away, you’re going to get a booking.”

Roy Keane also agrees with the former Arsenal player, saying: “When you’re on a yellow card, do not give the referee a chance to send you off.

“You can say it’s harsh all you want but it’s a yellow card.”

Sky Sports are just showing an example of Doku also kicking the ball away and not being shown a yellow card...

Here is the official explanation for the yellow card from the Premier League match centre on X: “The referee issued a second yellow card to Leandro Trossard for delaying the restart.”

After a frantic half of football, here is a quick look at some of the stats:

Half time: Manchester City 1-2 Arsenal

Sunday 22 September 2024 17:29 , Sonia Twigg

An intense half of Premier League football comes to an end. So often clashes between the biggest sides are cagey affairs, but today’s match has been anything but that.

City have been the better of the two teams, but Arsenal have grasped their chances, although the red card to Trossard just on the brink of half time has put a serious dent in their chances of getting all three points at the Etihad.

RED CARD! Trossard is sent off on the brink of half time - Manchester City 1-2 Arsenal

Sunday 22 September 2024 17:26 , Sonia Twigg

45+7 minutes: RED CARD! Partey is shown a yellow card for a sliding tackle just on the brink of half time, and the free kick will be City’s last chance of the half.

But there’s another twist in the story and Trossard is shown a red card! He has flown into a tackle, barging Bernardo Silva, and then kicked the ball away. The Arsenal midfielder had already been shown a yellow card earlier in the match and he has to go here!

Manchester City 1-2 Arsenal

45+5 minutes: City are trying to attack the Arsenal backline but the visitors are holding firm and trying to get through to the break with their lead intact.

Manchester City 1-2 Arsenal

Sunday 22 September 2024 17:20 , Sonia Twigg

45+2 minutes: There is a VAR check for a possible foul on Ederson from Martinelli, but the goal is allowed to stand!

Gary Neville has just called out Ederson for “allowing” himself to be knocked to the ground by Martinelli.

GOAL! Gabriel fires Gunners into the lead - Manchester City 1-2 Arsenal

Sunday 22 September 2024 17:19 , Sonia Twigg

45+1 minutes: GOAL! A minute into the six minutes of added time and Arsenal have taken the lead!

It has come against the run of play, but Gabriel has headed the ball into the back of the net.

He had looked dangerous from a corner beforehand and he was just in the perfect place for that one.

Another update from our man on the ground Richard Jolly:

Exit Rodri, clattered within three seconds of kick-off, hurt a quarter of an hour later, a knee problem providing a cause for concern for Manchester City, regardless of the result against Arsenal.

His importance does not just stem from his excellence - though as a possible Ballon d'Or winner, he is among the best in the world - but from City's record without him. They lost at Arsenal last season when he was suspended and when Mateo Kovacic had a particularly poor game. While City have fared better without Rodri this season, it is still more reassuring for him when he is present.

Manchester City 1-1 Arsenal

Sunday 22 September 2024 17:14 , Sonia Twigg

40 minutes: The game has just settled down a touch and Arsenal are enjoying a bit more time on the ball as it nears half time.

Although there have been two stoppages already so there is likely to be a reasonable amount of added time.

Manchester City 1-1 Arsenal

Sunday 22 September 2024 17:11 , Sonia Twigg

38 minutes: Chance! Another chance for Arsenal, it’s the first time they’ve got forward for a while.

The corner was perfectly placed but Gabriel just couldn’t direct his header into the back of the net, he had lost his marker Doku and carved out the ideal opportunity.

Manchester City 1-1 Arsenal

Sunday 22 September 2024 17:08 , Sonia Twigg

35 minutes: Chance! Doku tries his luck from the edge of the box, but his shot is wayward and goes wide.

It might have been offside anyway, and Arsenal head clear the following corner.

Manchester City 1-1 Arsenal

Sunday 22 September 2024 17:07 , Sonia Twigg

34 minutes: Leandro Trossard is shown a yellow card for a shirt tug, and Michael Oliver is facing a bit of a battle to stay in control of this game.

The tempers are rising from both sides.

Manchester City 1-1 Arsenal

Sunday 22 September 2024 17:06 , Sonia Twigg

33 minutes: Man City’s passing has been so clinical for most of the first half, but there’s just a couple of wayward passes creeping in and could that be a sign of frustration?

Arsenal are still playing most of the game inside their own half.

Manchester City 1-1 Arsenal

Sunday 22 September 2024 17:03 , Sonia Twigg

30 minutes: David Raya makes a low save to deny a drive along the ground from Kyle Walker.

Arsenal are really struggling to clear their lines against this high press from City, and they have given the ball away far too many times.

However, only one statistic matters, and the scoreline remains level.

Manchester City 1-1 Arsenal

Sunday 22 September 2024 17:01 , Sonia Twigg

28 minutes: Manchester City attack again, in numbers, they are camped outside the Arsenal box just trying to find a way through.

Arsenal win the ball back and clear, but cannot build an attack of their own and the pressure comes straight back onto them.

Manchester City 1-1 Arsenal

Sunday 22 September 2024 16:58 , Sonia Twigg

24 minutes: Manchester City’s indignation in the build up to the goal is reportedly because Arsenal took the free kick 10 yards away from where the foul took place.

That is pretty common in Premier League matches, and not really an excuse for not being alert enough to the quick free kick.

The fans are up from both sides, and this is developing into a thrilling contest.

GOAL! Riccardo Calafiori scores a stunning leveller - Manchester City 1-1 Arsenal

Sunday 22 September 2024 16:56 , Sonia Twigg

22 minutes: GOAL! Riccardo Calafiori has scored an absolutely stunning goal!

The free kick is taken quickly, City were caught napping and Calafiori receives the ball on the edge of the box and curls it perfectly into the side of the netting.

Guardiola is fuming and kicks his seat in frustration, but the Gunners are level.

Manchester City 1-0 Arsenal

Sunday 22 September 2024 16:54 , Sonia Twigg

21 minutes: The tempo of this match has not slowed down at all. Kovacic is on for Rodri, but there are heavy tackles flying in all over the place leaving two Arsenal players down.

The referee is just having a word with the two captains, probably to try and calm it down a bit.

Manchester City 1-0 Arsenal

Sunday 22 September 2024 16:53 , Sonia Twigg

19 minutes: Rodri is being helped from the pitch and he is limping fairly heavily. This is likely to be his last involvement in the match.

Kovacic has been instructed to warm up by Guardiola.

Time for some analysis from our Senior Football Correspondent, Richard Jolly at the Eithad:

Arsenal denied Erling Haaland a shot on target in the Premier League last season. He has made an impact on both of the defenders who subdued him then in the first 10 minutes here, colliding with William Saliba and accelerating away from Gabriel Magalhaes to score. It is 100 Manchester City goals in 105 games, or little over two seasons.

Manchester City 1-0 Arsenal

Sunday 22 September 2024 16:49 , Sonia Twigg

16 minutes: There’s another incident off the ball! Rodri has gone down and is writhing in pain.

It’s another stoppage, it’s a minor collision. VAR has checked it and dismissed it, but it could be a big blow for Pep Guardiola and Manchester City.

He does seem to be in some pain.

Manchester City 1-0 Arsenal

Sunday 22 September 2024 16:47 , Sonia Twigg

15 minutes: Post! Gundogan takes it! He curls it towards the near post, Raya dives and it thuds back into play off the woodwork!

City have looked like a different team in this match so far.

Manchester City 1-0 Arsenal

Sunday 22 September 2024 16:46 , Sonia Twigg

13 minutes: Manchester City have looked dangerous every time they go forwards.

They will have another chance here with a free kick just on the edge of the Arsenal box.

GOAL! Erling Haaland nets his 100th goal for City - Manchester City 1-0 Arsenal

Sunday 22 September 2024 16:42 , Sonia Twigg

9 minutes: GOAL!

Erling Haaland has fired his side into an early lead, it’s his 100th goal for the club.

It was one ball that just carved open the defence and neither centre-back could chase the forward, it was perfectly weighted and Haaland has just slotted the ball into the back of the net.

Manchester City 0-0 Arsenal

Sunday 22 September 2024 16:40 , Sonia Twigg

7 minutes: Chance! After the frantic start, the game has calmed down a bit, with both sides just trying to find their feet and pass the ball around a bit.

City have had most of the ball, and Gundogan has a brilliant chance to give his side the lead.

The ball was rapped into him, he takes a stunning touch to control it but then fires his volley wide of the goal!

Manchester City 0-0 Arsenal

Sunday 22 September 2024 16:37 , Sonia Twigg

5 minutes: Another heavy collision! This time it’s Haaland who instigates it, he jumps into Saliba there’s no other way of putting it.

Another free kick, and this could turn into a chaotic clash.

Manchester City 0-0 Arsenal

The match has resumed.

Sunday 22 September 2024 16:34 , Sonia Twigg

It took place inside the first flour or five seconds, Rodri dropped to the ground holding his head.

Gary Neville: ‘Arsenal need counter-attacking threat’

Sunday 22 September 2024 16:20 , Lawrence Ostlere

Neville speaking on Sky Sports: “Last season they came here and defended brilliantly and we feel like they’re set up to do that again today. [Thomas] Partey and Declan Rice are so important in making sure they have that shield in front of the back four. But then you need that bit of ruthlessness on the break.”

Mikel Arteta speaks ahead of the clash

Sunday 22 September 2024 16:14 , Sonia Twigg

The Arsenal manager told Sky Sports: “Ready. And we know we are full prepared and looking forward to it. It’s a demanding but an exciting week and we have to enjoy it.

“You have a game plan ready then the opponent does certain things to allow you to play in certain areas that you want, or not. What we do with the ball is very important as well.

“You have to travel together with the ball, be better, be closer to each other, be better in counter press, be better at high press, be dominant in the areas you want and you can create threat to the opposition.

“It was a little bit forced [to drop Ben White and start Riccardo Calafiori], but we are ok. We’ve done it with different players but we have full belief in the players we have. It gives us something different.”

Pep Guardiola speaks to Sky Sports ahead of the match

Sunday 22 September 2024 16:07 , Sonia Twigg

“We are at home, we’ve talked a little bit about some aspects: good transitions, occupying the spaces. Last season we didn’t do that and we will see. They’re not just incredible defensively, they make incredible high pressing, it’s so aggressive.

“[We haven’t just learned] from the two games against Arsenal - all the teams that play in a low block. As much as you play against those opponents, you learn what you have to do.

“What happened in the past [against Arsenal], it’s always an opportunity.

“I think its not a big, big one but [De Bruyne] was not available for today.”

That call has been made and there is no place for him in the matchday squad.

Here is the Man City squad: Ederson, Walker (C), Akanji, Dias, Gvardiol, Rodrigo, Gundogan, Bernardo, Savinho, Doku, Haaland SUBS | Ortega Moreno, Carson, Stones, Kovacic, Grealish, Nunes, Foden, Lewis, McAtee

Kevin De Bruyne is a major doubt but has not been ruled out after coming off injured in the 0-0 draw at home to Inter on Wednesday. Phil Foden, who is yet to start a match this season, and Ilkay Gundogan could replace the Belgian. Nathan Ake is injured, while Erling Haaland has the chance to bring up a century of goals in a Manchester City shirt - the striker is currently on 99.

Arsenal will be without captain Martin Odegaard but Declan Rice returns from suspension after missing the win at Tottenham last week. Gabriel Jesus replaced Leandro Trossard in the draw at Atalanta but was unconvincing and Mikel Arteta may opt to return Kai Havertz to the front line. Riccardo Calafiori is fit again but Mikel Merino remains sidelined.

Manchester City vs Arsenal

Sunday 22 September 2024 14:30 , Sonia Twigg

Manchester City host Arsenal in an early meeting of last season’s Premier League title rivals.

City won their fourth consecutive Premier League last campaign but were pushed all the way by the Gunners, who finished just two points behind Pep Guaridola’s side.

Mikel Arteta’s team are looking to go one step better this season and know the head-to-heads could be decisive, even at this very early stage of the title race.

Arsenal held the champions to a 0-0 draw on their last visit to the Etihad, but are winless in their last nine trips to Manchester City - a run that stretches back to 2015.

With City two points clear having won their opening four league games of the season, the hosts have a chance to open up a five-point lead at the top by extending their winning run.

Guardiola on Sterling

Sunday 22 September 2024 14:15 , Sonia Twigg

The City manager faces a reunion with his old assistant, Mikel Arteta, and with Raheem Sterling, who joined Arsenal on deadline day.

Guardiola said he was surprised to see the winger move on loan from Chelsea but felt Arteta had the same reaction after thinking a deal for Sterling was impossible.

The England international was named Footballer of the Year during his time at City, scoring 120 goals for Guardiola.

And the City manager said: “I wish him all the best. All the players that behaved well in this club, helped us to be who we are, where we are. We cannot understand the first years in my tenure at Manchester City without Raheem. He has been so important. I wish him all the best. Of course, I would prefer he doesn’t perform well on Sunday.”

Pep Guardiola issues Kevin De Bruyne injury update ahead of Arsenal clash

Sunday 22 September 2024 14:04 , Sonia Twigg

Kevin de Bruyne will face a late fitness test as Manchester City wait to see if he will be fit to face Arsenal on Sunday.

The midfielder went off at half-time in Wednesday’s 0-0 draw with Inter Milan with a hamstring problem and while he is making progress, manager Pep Guardiola is not sure if he will be available.

De Bruyne has started all four Premier League games this season for City and was pivotal in their last two wins over Arsenal, scoring three times in the victories that helped decide the title in the 2022-23 season.

And Guardiola said: “He feels a little bit better today but we have not yet had training and we will see. He could be [involved].”
