'Lowest bowling action since Trevor Chappell' stuns cricket world

He’s played over 60 white-ball internationals for India but Kedar Jadhav has today stunned the cricket world with his remarkable bowling action.

Measurements by the broadcaster of India’s ODI series against Australia showed the 33-year-old released the ball just 140 centimetres above the ground.

Jadhav himself is just 165cm tall, leaving the commentators to wonder if such an extreme action had ever been seen before.

“He’s a very short man, plus he bends at this knee to shorten his height further and then bowls side-arm,” one Indian caller said.

“So as a result, that has to be the lowest release point ever in men’s cricket. Not only is it very side-arm, it’s also extremely low.”

The commentators made the most of the match-up to have fun with Australia.

“Extremely low release point – I think lowest after Trevor Chappell’s delivery,” one said to laughter in the box.

Chappell, of course, bowled underarm at the behest of brother and captain Greg – a future Indian coach and current Aussie selector – to win an ODI against New Zealand in 1981.

Jadhav’s release wasn’t quite that extreme but it certainly surprised cricket fans, with some wondering if it was even legal:

Jadhav picked up the wicket of Marcus Stoinis as he finished with figures of 7-31.

Australia reached 7-236 off their 50 overs, with Usman Khawaja (50) and Glenn Maxwell (40 after a promotion to No.5) top-scoring for the tourists.

Aussie captain hits new low in horror ODI run

Aaron Finch fell for a third-ball duck to put himself in further jeopardy of forcing the selectors’ hands ahead of the Cricket World Cup.

Coach Justin Langer vowed this week to be patient during Finch’s slump, which dates back to last July and spans 20 white-ball innings without reaching 50.

But with the World Cup starting in just under three months, Langer’s patience will presumably have a breaking point.

Finch has a further four games in the current series to find form before Australia travel to the UAE for a five-match series against Pakistan.

Australia must then name their 15-man World Cup squad by April 23.

The prospect of Finch missing the cut was unthinkable when he was appointed limited-overs captain in 2018, the same year he was Australia’s leading ODI run-scorer with 493, and he has been a major part of World Cup planning.

Yet if the opener is unable to bank a big score this month then selectors may be forced to wield the axe and find a new skipper.

Finch was out edging in Hyderabad on Saturday, defeated by the top-ranked ODI bowler in the world Jasprit Bumrah for the second time on tour.

The 32-year-old shouldered arms to the first ball he faced, played and missed, then nudged forward to a fine delivery that seamed off the deck and took the edge that MS Dhoni gleefully accepted.
