Liverpool vs Aston Villa LIVE!

Liverpool comfortably beat Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday thanks to goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Mohamed Salah, either side of a Matty Cash own goal.

Just three mintues in, a corner from Trent Alexander-Arnold, captaining the side for the first time at Anfield in the absence of Virgil van Dijk, dropped to Szoboszlai on the edge of the penalty area and the Hungary captain drilled a diagonal shot across the box and inside the far post. Salah’s pass then picked out Darwin Nunez and the Uruguay international’s shot hit the post and went in off Cash.

In the 55th minute, Nunez, who had just missed a sitter from Salah's cross, flicked on Andy Robertson’s corner and the Egypt international blasted home from close range.

A comfortable win for Liverpool!

Four minutes added on as Jhon Duran takes exception with Joe Gomez after Liverpool win a foul by their own corner flag.

Liverpool 3-0 Aston Villa | 87 mins

Time for Alexis Mac Allister to get a rest before his international duties in South America.

Wataru Endo introduced off the bench.

Around the grounds

15:47 , Marc Mayo

Two late Crystal Palace goals look to have assured them of a win over Wolves at Selhurst Park, Eberechi Eze and Odsonne Edouard netting late on.

Liverpool 3-0 Aston Villa | 83 mins

15:44 , Marc Mayo

The away end breaks out in a defiant rendition of ‘God Save The King’, with little to do but wind up the home faithful. It gets duly booed.

Liverpool 3-0 Aston Villa | 81 mins

15:43 , Marc Mayo

Joe Gomez is occupying the floating right-back slot now with Jarell Quansah at centre-back on his home debut.

Liverpool 3-0 Aston Villa | 77 mins

15:37 , Marc Mayo

Jhon Duran has flayed a couple of efforts way off target since coming on. It’s been a really poor watch for the away fans, this.

Liverpool 3-0 Aston Villa | 74 mins

15:35 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

A poor defensive header back to the Villa goal allows Mohamed Salah to bear down on goal, but his flicked effort is turned over by Emi Martinez.

The corner eventually falls for Harvey Elliott and he sees a shot deflect narrowly wide.

Liverpool 3-0 Aston Villa | 73 mins

15:33 , Marc Mayo

Final changes for Villa as Youri Tielemans and Jhon Druan replace Douglas Luiz and Ollie Watkins.

Liverpool 3-0 Aston Villa | 71 mins

15:32 , Marc Mayo

Now a worry for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is coming off after treatment on the turf.

Not sure what his issue is but he casually strolls off, handing over the captain’s armband before a chat with Jurgen Klopp. On comes Jarrell Quansah.

Liverpool 3-0 Aston Villa | 70 mins

15:30 , Marc Mayo

There goes Trent Alexander-Arnold again!

A really good run from the right-back position beats two players and finds himself in the central midfield role he’ll surely occupy for England this week.

He takes aim and fires just over from 20 yards!

Liverpool 3-0 Aston Villa | 69 mins

15:29 , Marc Mayo

Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose playmaking has been sensational today, swings a free-kick in which Joel Matip flicks harmlessly wide.

Liverpool 3-0 Aston Villa | 65 mins

15:25 , Marc Mayo

Time for the changes.

Harvey Elliott, Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo are on for Curtis Jones, Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz.

Early substitute Leon Bailey is off for Villa, Nicolo Zaniolo on.

Liverpool 3-0 Aston Villa | 61 mins

15:22 , Marc Mayo

We’re about to see a triple change as Jurgen Klopp looks to repel a growing period of Villa pressure.

The visitors had gained a good foothold before the goal and have just had John McGinn direct a header straight at the goalkeeper.

Liverpool 3-0 Aston Villa | 57 mins

15:18 , Marc Mayo

This could turn into a big win for Liverpool with Darwin Nunez ghosting into the box before his cut-back is prevented from finding Mohamed Salah.

Villa desperately need to get a grip.

GGGOOOOAAALLL!!! Liverpool 3-0 Aston Villa | Salah, 55'

15:15 , Marc Mayo

MOHAMED SALAH!

A corner from the right is turned goalwards by Darwin Nunez and there’s Salah, timing his run to perfection, to poke home at the back stick.

Get Saudi on the phone, it’ll cost another £30m!

Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa | 53 mins

15:14 , Marc Mayo

A bit more possession for Villa this half than earlier on when Liverpool sat on the ball at 2-0.

The hosts are showing a bit more in the press though, and Curtis Jones does well to force an error.

Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa | 50 mins

15:10 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

Superb breakaway from Liverpool as Mohamed Salah escapes down the right and he dinks a delightful ball towards Darwin Nunez on the stretch... the goal is gaping but he heads wide!

It was a tough one in fairness, with a touch too much pace on the ball.

Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa | 49 mins

15:08 , Marc Mayo

SAVE!

Villa win a free-kick deep in Liverpool territory and play it short, going wide left to Lucas Digne. A beauty of a cross finds Matty Cash at the back post but Alisson Becker palms it away!

Watkins gets a weak flick on the corner ball in. Wide.

Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa | 46 mins

15:06 , Marc Mayo

No changes at the break with Boubacar Kamara the only player on a card.

Villa have also already lost Diego Carlos to injury, bringing Leon Bailey off the bench.

Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa | KICK OFF!

15:05 , Marc Mayo

The second half begins at Anfield!

Work to do for Aston Villa

15:01 , Marc Mayo

There have been signs of life late in the first half for a Villa side guilty of a big error before the first goal.

They need to get Ollie Watkins involved more and start to test Alisson Becker if they are to have any hope. The danger of being caught on the break may be something they have to simply put up with.

Around the grounds

It’s goalless between Crystal Palace and Wolves in the TV game.

A soon-to-be familiar face in the stands

14:55 , Marc Mayo

All good for Liverpool

14:52 , Marc Mayo

A pretty comfy half of football, helped by a moment of magic from their £60m man Dominik Szoboszlai in the fourth minute.

A third goal would kill this contest and Villa still look there to be got on the counter.

Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa | HALF TIME!

14:49 , Marc Mayo

Emi Martinez palms away Mohamed Salah cutting in from the right flank!

And that’s the break at Anfield with the Reds ahead courtesy of Dominik Szoboszlai’s first Liverpool goal and an unfortunate own goal by Matty Cash.

Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa | 45 mins

14:46 , Marc Mayo

Four minutes added on.

Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa | 44 mins

14:44 , Marc Mayo

Villa come back at Liverpool after an error from Dominik Szoboszlai, Moussa Diaby curling an effort wide on his left foot.

Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa | 42 mins

14:43 , Marc Mayo

Trent Alexander-Arnold has looked pretty hungry today and drills a shot wide from 25 yards after being teed up by Dominik Szoboszlai.

Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa | 39 mins

14:40 , Marc Mayo

OFF THE BAR!

VAR would have certainly called this back, so the fact Darwin Nunez clips the bar after the offside Mohamed Salah played him in is not really worth too much. Villa scramble clear.

Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa | 37 mins

14:39 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

Liverpool have taken their foot off the pedal in the Anfield sun and somehow still have a two goal lead.

A cross from the left sees Leon Bailey fling a lazy foot at it, the ball then bouncing off Ollie Watkins and wide. Neither player wanted it!

Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa | 32 mins

14:34 , Marc Mayo

Decent chance for John McGinn as Moussa Diaby steals the ball off Joe Gomez (VAR probably sees that as a foul).

The ball is rolled wide to McGinn on the run and he flies a left-footed effort over!

Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa | 32 mins

14:32 , Marc Mayo

Of course, a goal will change this game and Villa swing in a decent corner that’s defended well in front of the Kop.

Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa | 29 mins

14:30 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

The Reds certainly look the most likely team to grab the next goal too, with Joel Matip heading over a wicked ball in by Dominik Szoboszlai.

That was a free header, too!

Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa | 26 mins

14:28 , Marc Mayo

VAR did have a look at that goal for offside but no worries for Liverpool, who are cruising now.

GGGOOOOAAALLL!!! Liverpool 2-0 Aston Villa | Cash OG, 22'

14:22 , Marc Mayo

MATTY CASH OWN GOAL!

Disaster for the defender, moments after being dropped back from midfield by Unai Emery...

Trent Alexander-Arnold finds Mohamed Salah down the right and Darwin Nunez slams a shot against the post. It cannons onto Cash and he can do nothing about diverting it home!

Liverpool 1-0 Aston Villa | 19 mins

14:20 , Marc Mayo

That’s that for Diego Carlos and, despite Clement Lenglet getting ready, Unai Emery opts for Leon Bailey off the bench.

Matty Cash shuffles back to right-back and Ezri Konsa into the middle.

Liverpool 1-0 Aston Villa | 17 mins

14:17 , Marc Mayo

Good work from Ezri Konsa to repel Luis Diaz after a smart crossfield ball from Trent Alexander-Arnold. The shot is blocked for a corner.

Ollie Watkins heads clear before Emi Martinez plucks Andy Robertson’s second ball in.

Bad news for Villa though with Diego Carlos down.

Liverpool 1-0 Aston Villa | 15 mins

14:15 , Marc Mayo

Nervy moment for Liverpool!

Trent Alexander-Arnold stabs a backpass towards Alisson Becker, not realising Ollie Watkins had caught on and was racing down on goal.

Luckily for him, it just has enough pace to reach the goalkeeper and be hoofed clear.

Liverpool 1-0 Aston Villa | 11 mins

14:12 , Marc Mayo

First threat from the away team as a lofted pass finds Moussa Diaby gallopping down the right, Joe Gomez being caught out.

The cross is not quite good enough to find Ollie Watkins and Liverpool, with a good slide tackle by Dominik Szoboszlai, deal with it.

Liverpool 1-0 Aston Villa | 9 mins

14:10 , Marc Mayo

Nice and easy on the ball for Liverpool, Villa aren’t going chasing them high up the pitch - no doubt fearful of leaving space in behind.

Two-thirds of the ball in the hosts’ favour so far, and growing.

Liverpool 1-0 Aston Villa | 6 mins

14:07 , Marc Mayo

Safe to say Aston Villa didn’t see that coming but it was a goal made from their own error as Pau Torres was lazily caught by Liverpool’s high press.

This is not a place you want to go behind early... the Reds’ tails are up!

GGOOOAAALLL!!! Liverpool 1-0 Aston Villa | Szoboszlai, 4’

14:04 , Marc Mayo

Villa give the ball away in their own box and Pau Torres manages to clear as Darwin Nunez lurks.

The corner beats everybody and comes out to Dominik Szoboszlai...

WHAT A HIT!

He arrows it in perfectly from the edge of the box into the opposite corner, Emi Martinez had no chance and that’s his first Liverpool goal!

Liverpool 0-0 Aston Villa | 2 mins

14:02 , Marc Mayo

Looks like a 4-2-3-1 from Villa with Ezri Konsa at right-back and Matty Cash on the wing. Usual set-up from Liverpool too, Darwin Nunez up front with Luis Diaz on the left of a 4-3-3- attack.

Milestone for Jurgen Klopp

The Liverpool boss takes charge of his 300th Premier League game today.

His team have come a long way since that 0-0 draw with Tottenham in October 2015.

In fact, none of his squad is even at the club anymore! The team that day featured Simon Mignolet in goal plus Adam Bogdan and Kolo Toure on the bench.

Dimitar Berbatov has backed his old rivals to come out on top today.

“I think Liverpool will be buzzing with that win against Newcastle with 10 men because that was difficult to do at St James' Park,2 he told Betfair.

Ryan Gravenberch makes sentimental pick for shirt number

12:46 , Marc Mayo

Ryan Gravenberch’s Liverpool shirt number has been confirmed after he completed a £34million transfer from Bayern Munich.

Plenty of shirt numbers were available to the 21-year-old, the highest of which being the No12 vacated by Joe Gomez over the summer, but Ajax academy graduate Gravenberch will don the No38 shirt an Anfield.

However, a sentimental option was also there for Gravenberch. He wore the No38 shirt during his early days in the Ajax first-team and took that number at Bayern too, with his more regular Ajax No8 not available at either Munich or Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp fears Mohamed Salah saga not over yet

12:29 , Marc Mayo

Amid reports of a £200million bid for Mohamed Salah arriving soon from Al-Ittihad, Jurgen Klopp spoke in the week of why he thinks Saudi Arabia’s transfer window should not be allowed to run after Europe’s shuts.

He said: “I think the next two weeks will show how much of a challenge it is, because whatever happens there, obviously, nobody can react any more.

“That's something I think UEFA or whoever should have an eye on. Because we all have to protect the game, and we want [to].

“It's not illegal, it's the game, and obviously I love all my players who play now in Saudi Arabia. It's not like it distracts me now from my watching habits, but we have to make sure all these European leagues... stay as strong as they are.”
