Liverpool manager news: Bayer Leverkusen confident of keeping Xabi Alonso despite links

Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro says there is “no reason” why manager Xabi Alonso will not see out his contract with the club.

Alonso is making waves in his first job in senior football and is on course to lead the unbeaten Leverkusen to a first Bundesliga title in their history.

His team lead champions Bayern Munich by ten points and could even add the DFB-Pokal and Europa League crowns to what may be an historic campaign.

They meet Dusseldorf in the semi-finals of the domestic club competition before playing West Ham in the last-16 of the Europa League.

As a result, Alonso has been linked with a number of big moves. Both Liverpool, who are on the hunt for Jurgen Klopp’s successor, and Bayern have been touted as potential landing spots.

Thomas Tuchel will leave the Allianz Arena at the end of the season after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract with the club a year early.

Alonso represented both clubs during his storied playing career but has so far remained coy on his future.

"Maybe you have some questions about my future, but I'm sorry, I have nothing new to say - I wanted to say that beforehand," he told a press conference last month.

"Right now I'm the [Leverkusen] coach. That's for sure. I have nothing new to say for the future. We will see. It's normal that there are questions, but it's off topic now. Now is not the time for me to talk much about it."

Despite the interest surrounding Alonso, Carro believes Leverkusen could keep a hold of their in-demand coach.

“Xabi Alonso has a contract until 2026 and there is no reason to doubt that he will stay here,” he said.

“In football you never know what will happen but I have a lot of trust, we have a good relationship”.
