Liverpool have agreed a deal worth an initial £64million to sign Benfica striker Darwin Nunez.

The Portuguese club confirmed the agreement in a statement on Monday morning, with the deal potentially rising to £85m including add-ons, meaning Nunez would become the most expensive player in Liverpool’s history, surpassing the £75m they paid for defender Virgil van Dijk.

The Uruguayan, who signed for Benfica from Spanish side Almeria in 2020, has enjoyed a superb season, scoring 34 times in 41 appearances.

The 22-year-old found the net six times in Benfica’s run to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, including in both legs of their tie against Liverpool in the last-eight.

He had attracted reported interest from a number of Premier League clubs but Liverpool have won the race for his signature.

Nunez’s arrival will be Jurgen Klopp’s second major attacking addition in six months, after the success of Luis Diaz’s mid-season signing from Benfica’s Portuguese rivals Porto.

Liverpool’s forward line could be set for a major revamp over the next year, with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino all entering the final 12 months of their contracts. The Anfield club have already rejected a £30m bid from Bayern Munich for Mane this summer and are continuing talks with Salah over a new deal.
