WWE Royal Rumble 2025 results, grades and analysis: Jey Uso, Charlotte Flair clinch WrestleMania 41 spots
The wildest night in professional wrestling delivered and sets up the Road to WrestleMania
The most exciting night of the WWE calendar unfolded Saturday as the 38th installment of the Royal Rumble took place at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. It marked the official kickoff for the Road to WrestleMania 41, which culminates in April at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
Saturday's event featured four matches — relatively light out of necessity considering the Men's and Women's Royal Rumble contests took more than an hour each and saw a returning Charlotte Flair and Jey Uso clinch their spots at WrestleMania 41.
Aside from the titular rumbles, the feud between Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens came to a head with "The American Nightmare" retaining in an absolutely brutal ladder match. The other clash was for the WWE Tag Team Championships, as DIY successfully defended (with some help from the Street Profits) against Motor City Machine Guns in a best two-out-of-three falls affair.
Of course, as is tradition for the Royal Rumble, surprises and returns were the name of the game. In the women's Royal Rumble match we saw returns from not only Flair, but also Alexa Bliss, Trish Stratus and Nikki Bella. Longtime TNA powerhouse Jordynne Grace also made her second appearance and the WWE announce team stated she was officially under the brand's umbrella.
On the men’s side, there were fewer entrant-related surprises with just Joe Hendry, IShowSpeed and a returning AJ Styles being the most unexpected participants. That said, Uso winning the Royal Rumble was unequivocally the most surprising winner in recent WWE history, setting him up for a showdown with either Rhodes or World Heavyweight Champion Gunther in April.
Here are the results, grades and analysis from Saturday's event.
Women's Royal Rumble match: Charlotte Flair wins in 1 hour and 10 minutes

Analysis: WWE hit every note it needed to with the opening match of the Royal Rumble. We had major returns (teased and surprises) and we continued to see the depth in the women’s division across all of WWE’s brands. There will certainly be some complaints about Flair winning, but it was an absolutely justifiable booking decision considering her star power and ability. As I wrote in my prediction for the Uncrowned Horsemen roundtable, there are great story possibilities between Flair and either Tiffany Stratton or Rhea Ripley. The biggest (non-actual) winners here, in my opinion, were the NXT women who competed and showcased the talent within that roster in particular.

Analysis: This was a solid tag-team match between two of the best teams in the world, but it left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. The action was fine, albeit a bit brief, and there were definitely creative and fun moments throughout. A more vicious, heel version of the Street Profits coming back into the picture adds a new wrinkle to SmackDown’s already loaded tag-team division. MCMG was protected here, which was important if they were going to lose. Ultimately, when these four are involved on a PLE, I want to walk away feeling something more than “that was fine.”
Cody Rhodes (c.) def. Kevin Owens in 25:05 in a ladder match for the Undisputed WWE Championship
Grade: A
Best spot: Owens’ Avalanche Fisherman’s Buster

Analysis: Even though it was fairly obvious that Rhodes was going to leave Lucas Oil Stadium as champion, this match was probably the best on the card. There were multiple “holy you-know-what” moments of violence in this match, which really helped push a compelling story with Rhodes in particular. As we head toward WrestleMania 41, it’s likely that we’re going to see the weight of being Undisputed WWE Champion impact Rhodes, and that really kicked into high gear Saturday as we saw a violent version of "The American Nightmare" we haven’t seen since his return to WWE in 2022. Will he turn heel before WrestleMania? Probably not because he’s a generational talent as a babyface, but for the first time in three years, the seeds have been planted. In turn, there are cracks beginning to show in Rhodes’ reign as well. Owens was brutalized Saturday, so I expect that we won’t see him for a little while, but he deserves his flowers for this match and feud in general.
Men's Royal Rumble match: Jey Uso wins in 1 hour and 20 minutes
Grade: B+
Best spot: Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins teaming up then fighting

Analysis: Let’s not sugarcoat it: Uso winning was a legitimate stunner. In a field with Reigns, John Cena, CM Punk and Rollins, there were so many OTHER possibilities than the one WWE is taking for the Road to WrestleMania. Uso was an unbelievably over star heading into the Royal Rumble, but he had just lost a World Heavyweight Championship match a week prior, so this really wasn’t on my radar as a realistic outcome. That said, the fact that it was such a swerve is what makes it work so well. The Reigns-Rollins moment was one of the best of the night and it appears as if we’re going to get them and Punk in a program moving forward. (Can Drake Riggs see the future? Maybe.) The other big question coming out of the men’s Royal Rumble is what is Cena’s path forward? The 16-time world champion declared he would be in March's Elimination Chamber and wants to be in the main event of WrestleMania and win his record-breaking 17th world championship. I’m not convinced that’s going to happen, but dragging out Cena’s chase and him repeatedly falling short is a far more compelling story to tell on the farewell tour.
