MLB playoff scores, live updates: Padres fend off Dodgers, Mets roll past Phillies in NLDS Game 3

The Mets and Padres took 2-1 series leads and are one win away from reaching the NLCS

Tuesday belonged to the National League, with Game 3s in each of the NL Division Series.

The Mets topped the Phillies in New York in the early game, and the Padres edged out the Dodgers in the third game of the highly anticipated Southern California battle.

All eight teams still alive in the postseason will be in action Wednesday in what's sure to be an action-packed day across the country.

It wasn’t as heated as the last time out, but the San Diego Padres picked up a second straight win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday.

The Padres hung on to beat the Dodgers 6-5 in Game 3 of their series at Petco Park in another wild battle in the NLDS. The Padres now hold a 2-1 lead in the series and are just a win away from reaching the NLCS for the second time in the past three seasons.

After Mookie Betts opened the game with a perfect redemption home run against Jurickson Profar, the Padres appeared to break the game open in the second. They scored six runs in that inning on a Fernando Tatis two-run home run and a number of defensive miscues from the Dodgers. But in the next half-inning, the Dodgers responded with a Teoscar Hernandez grand slam to keep them in it.

The game sped up after that early flurry, but the Padres hung on every step of the way to sneak out with the one-run win. They return to Petco Park on Wednesday for Game 4 with a chance to close out the series at home.

The New York Mets are a win away from the NLCS.

Sean Manaea pitched seven one-run innings, and the Mets capitalized twice with two out and the bases loaded to secure a 7-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday. With the win, the Mets took a 2-1 NLDS lead and have a chance to close out the series at home on Wednesday.

The win continues a remarkable run for a Mets team that appeared to be out of the playoff race at midseason and required a win on the final day of the regular season to secure its spot in the playoffs.

The Phillies now need to win two straight to avoid more playoff disappointment in a postseason that many believed was theirs for the taking.

Here's a look at Tuesday's NLDS action:

LIVE COVERAGE IS OVER72 updates
  • FINAL: Padres 6, Dodgers 5

The Padres were on their way to a rout until Teoscar Hernandez hit a grand slam. Their bullpen then combined for four innings of one-hit ball against one of the best offenses in baseball, with six combined strikeouts.

It was an eventful game in an eventful series, and the Padres lead 2-1. Game 4 is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m. PT.

  • Top 9: Robert Suarez stays in for the ninth inning

It'll be the Padres closer against at least Max Muncy, Will Smith and Gavin Lux with a one-run lead.

  • End 8: Padres 6, Dodgers 5

That's three quick outs for the Dodgers to close the eighth, and the Padres are now just three outs way from a Game 3 win.

  • Mid-8: Padres 6, Dodgers 5

Suarez closed out the inning without issue, and the Padres will head to the bottom of the inning with their one-run lead intact.

  • Padres swapping pitchers

Freddie Freeman hit a single for the Dodgers in the eighth, but it came after Ohtani struck out looking and Betts flied out to center. Freeman really struggled to run to first after his hit, too, and he was quickly subbed for a pinch runner.

That'll do it for Padres pitcher Tanner Scott. Robert Suarez is coming in to close out the inning.

  • End 7: Padres 6, Dodgers 5

The Dodgers are running out of time to complete the comeback here. Shohei Ohtani will kick things off in the eighth.

  • Anthony Banda retired all four pitchers that he faced, but the Dodgers are making a switch in the seventh now. Daniel Hudson will take it the rest of the way in the inning.

  • Mid 7: Padres 6, Dodgers 5

That's three more quick outs for the Padres, who closed out the inning after Pages struck out swinging. This game is speeding up after the early string of runs, but the Padres are hanging on to their one run lead.

  • End 6: Padres 6, Dodgers 5

Anthony Banda replaced Walker Buehler on the mound for the Dodgers, and he picked up a pair of strikeouts before Higashioka lined out to center. We'll head to the seventh with the Padres still up by a run.

  • Mid 6: Padres 6, Dodgers 5

Jeremiah Estrada is on the mound now for the Padres, and he struck out both Hernandez and Muncy before Will Smith grounded out to shortstop for another quick inning. San Diego's lead is still one.

  • After 5: Padres 6, Dodgers 5

Finally, we have another hit. Machado hit a single to left in the fifth, and the Dodgers then walked Merrill intentionally, but they got out of the inning when Xander Bogaerts grounded out while breaking his bat.

  • Mid-5: Padres 6, Dodgers 5

Ohtani, Betts and Freeman were all called out in the fifth in what was the fourth-straight 1-2-3 half-inning. Tatis is up first for the Padres in the bottom of the fifth.

  • After 4: Padres 6, Dodgers 5

The Dodgers turned a double play to get out of the fourth without giving up a run, but Freddie Freeman appears to have twisted his ankle while making the catch at first. He limped back to the dugout.

  • Mid-4: Padres 6, Dodgers 5

That's another quick 1-2-3 inning after both Lux and Pages flied out to right, and Edman grounded out to first. The Padres will head back to the plate with a one-run lead.

  • End 3: Padres 6, Dodgers 5

After a chaotic few innings, the Dodgers get three quick outs to end the third.

  • Mid-3: Padres 6, Dodgers 5

Thanks to a huge shot from Teoscar Hernandez, we've got a game again in San Diego.

  • Teoscar Hernandez grand slam

Well, this game is far from over. Teoscar Hernandez just hit a deep grand slam to center field for the Dodgers, and we've got a one-run game again. Incredible.

  • Miguel Rojas out for Dodgers

The Dodgers just pulled Miguel Rojas from the bases with an apparent groin injury. He pulled up near third base just now after being checked out in the bottom of the second.

  • Dodgers load up bases in the third

The Dodgers are not out of this thing. They've loaded the bases with three quick singles to start the third inning.

  • Mookie Betts responds with perfect home run

Mookie Betts opened the game tonight with a wild redemption home run against Jurickson Profar.

  • After 2: Padres 6, Dodgers 1

Thanks to a number of Dodgers miscues and a big home run from Tatis, the Padres have broken this game wide open. They lead by five after just two innings at Petco Park.

  • Tatis hits a deep home run

The Padres aren't slowing down. Fernando Tatis Jr. drilled a two-run home run to left field, and this game is getting out of hand quickly.

The Padres lead 6-1 in the second.

  • The Padres just added another off a deep sac fly from Higashioka. They lead now 4-1.

  • Padres score two more

And there's a two-run double up the right-field line from David Peralta. The Padres are suddenly up 3-1, and the Dodgers don't have an out in the second.

  • Padres tie the game up

That could've been another double play for the Dodgers, but they didn't get a single out after Bogaerts grounded to short.

Machado made it home safely to tie the game, and the Dodgers are meeting at the mound to try to reset.

  • Machado singled to center to start the bottom of the inning, and then he made it to third after a brutal error from Freeman on what could've been a double play on an easy ground ball from Merrill. San Diego is threatening to score here.

  • Smith struck out swinging, and both Lux and King grounded out for the Dodgers. That's another quick 1-2-3 inning, this time from the Padres.

The Dodgers' lead is still 1-0 after the top of the second.

  • Mookie Betts really wasn't taking any chances today with his home run trot.

  • After 1: Dodgers 1, Padres 0

The Dodgers made quick work of the top of the Padres' order in the bottom of the first. After three quick outs, the Dodgers will head to the second up by a run.

  • Betts' home run was almost a carbon copy of his almost home run at Dodger Stadium in Game 2 — except Profar failed to make the catch this time. Betts, who got fooled by Profar's concealed catch in Game 2, wasn't getting fooled again. He stepped off the baseline before umpires officially signaled a home run.

Dodgers lead 1-0 after the top of the first.

Here's the play from Game 2 for comparison:

  • Michael King struck out Shohei Ohtani for the game's first out. But Mookie Betts got the best of him with a solo home run for a 1-0 Dodgers lead. Betts breaks an 0-for-22 postseason streak to put the Dodgers on top early.

  • Michael King is warming up on the mound, and we're moments away from first pitch.

  • Dave Roberts' welcome to Petco Park:

  • Padres fans just greeted Dave Roberts with a healthy round of boos at Petco Park. Here's a roundup of all the Padres-Dodgers drama that escalated with Dodgers fans throwing stuff at Padres players in Game 2.

  • There's a lot of drama surrounding Game 3 in San Diego, much of it focused on Manny Machado throwing a ball toward the Dodgers dugout in Game 2. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was critical of Machado on Monday. He softened his stance Tuesday in a pregame interview with Fox Sports, hours after Padres manager Mike Schildt stood up for Machado.

Here's Roberts to Fox Sports in the leadup to Game 3 when asked about the seriousness of Machado's throw:

Not very serious," Roberts said. "I really don’t think that he was trying to hurt anybody. I do feel that there was a lot behind that throw if you’re gonna throw the ball toward the dugout.

"Like I said, I’ve coached Manny. We have a good relationship. He is an ultimate competitor. As are we. For me and my guys, we’re focused on today. What happened happened."

    Here's the throw in question:

  • Padres starters with Michael King on the mound:

  • For the nightcap, here are your Dodgers starters. Freddie Freeman is back, and Walker Buehler will take the mound.

  • Mets win, take 2-1 series lead over Phillies

That's the game. The Phillies fail to score in the ninth, and the New York Mets are one win away from the NLCS.

Sean Manaea pitched seven one-run innings, and the Mets capitalized twice with two outs and the bases loaded to secure a 7-2 win. With the victory, the Mets take a 2-1 NLDS lead and have a chance to close out the series at home on Wednesday.

Manaea pitched one of the best games of his career, allowing three hits and two walks with six strikeouts in seven innings of work. He left the game in the top of the eighth with a shutout intact, but left a baserunner on first who came around to score. No matter. He picked up the win after a stellar outing.

Pete Alonso and and Jesse Winkler each hit solo home runs while Mark Vientos and Jose Iglesias posted two RBI each.

  • The Mets leave the eighth with a 7-2 lead, and the Phillies need a miracle with three outs to work with.

  • There's more insurance for the Mets. Francisco Lindor hits an RBI double to extend New York's lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the eighth. New York has runners on second and third with two outs.

  • Nick Castellanos adds another Phillies run with an RBI single to left field. The top of the eighth ends with an Alec Bohm lineout to center field.

Philadelphia cuts New York's lead to 6-2 but has a lot of work left to do with three outs remaining.

  • The Phillies are on the board. Bryce Harper delivers with two out and two on in the seventh inning with a single to right field. The RBI single cuts New York's lead to 6-1 and leaves the bases loaded.

  • Sean Manaea allows a leadoff infield single to Edmundo Sosa, and his day is done. He receives a well-earned ovation from the Citi Field crowd after seven strong innings.

  • Mets starter Sean Manaea is back out for the eighth inning with a 6-0 lead. He had 87 pitches through seven.

  • Disaster for the Phillies. Jose Iglesias singles off Jose Ruiz with the bases loaded to score two more runs. Pets Alonso's thrown out at home after a fruitless effort to score a third run. But the damage is done.

New York extends its lead to 6-0 through seven innings.

  • Jose Ruiz is in for the Phillies to get the final out in the seventh with the bases loaded.

  • Phillies reliever Jose Alvarado gets two outs but walks the bases loaded from there in the seventh. He's done.

  • Sean Manaea continues to deal. He retires the Phillies' side on seven pitches in the seventh, including an inning-ending strikeout of Austin Hays. Mets lead 4-0 heading into the seventh-inning stretch.

Manaea has allowed two hits and issued two walks in seven shutout innings with six strikeouts. He's at 87 pitches. Will he come back out for the eighth?

  • New York starter Sean Manaea's back out for the seventh inning with the Mets holding a 4-0 lead.

  • The Mets add on. Phillies reliever Orion Kerkering gets two outs after inheriting a bases-loaded jam. But Starling Marte comes through for the Mets with a two-out, line-drive single to score two runs.

Mets double their lead to 4-0 before Kerkering gets out of the sixth with no further damage.
