Joe Joyce's career at the top level of the heavyweight division may be over. The British heavyweight lost a hard-fought unanimous decision (98-92, 97-93, 96-95) to Croatia's Filip Hrgovic on Saturday evening at the Co-op Live Arena in Manchester, England.

Hrgovic (18-1, 14 KOs) found a home for his right hand on Joyce's chin early in the fight, landing with frequency and power. Joyce, however, was largely unfazed by the clean shots connecting on him and managed to bounce back in the mid-rounds as a tired Hrgovic chose to seek refuge on the ropes and allowed himself to be outworked by the Brit at close range.

Just as Joyce (16-4, 15 KOs) was starting to take over in the fight, Hrgovic found a second wind and produced a strong finish, leading to his hand getting raised at the end of 10 grueling rounds.

Hrgovic, 32, who claimed the WBO international title with his victory over Joyce, will now likely walk into another big fight in the heavyweight division. Joyce, 39, will have to seriously consider his future in the sport as Saturday marked his fourth loss over his past five fights.

In the night's chief support, David Adeleye (14-1, 13 KOs) won the British heavyweight championship with a sixth-round TKO of Jeamie "TKV" Tshikeva (8-2, 5 KOs).

In a controversial moment in the deciding round, Adeleye and Tshikeva were embroiled in a clinch and ordered to break by referee Ron Kearney. Kearney even pushed Tshikeva's left hand down in an attempt to separate the boxers from each other.

Just moments after, Adeleye floored Tshikeva with a left hook to score the first knockdown of the fight. Tshikeva rose but was put down again by a flurry just a few seconds later and was stopped on his feet by the referee.
