Arnold Barboza Jr. upset the odds on enemy soil to cement his shot at a world title.

The unbeaten Californian captured the WBO interim super lightweight championship and emerged victorious in a WBO final eliminator by edging a split decision win over Britain's Jack Catterall on Saturday afternoon at the Co-op Live Arena in Manchester, England.

Two judges scored the fight 115-113 for Barboza, while a third judge had it for Catterall by the same margin. Uncrowned had it 115-113 in favor of Catterall, but it was a very close fight and none of the scorecards should be viewed as controversial.

Catterall (30-2, 13 KOs) got off to a good start, breaking Barboza's guard with his southpaw left hand in the early rounds, but it wasn't long before Barboza (32-0, 11 KOs) started outworking Catterall upon realizing the Brit was staying in range after his attacks rather than darting out, creating openings for Barboza to counter.

Catterall boxed with his lead hand low, allowing Barboza the opportunity to land his left hand, which he did many times in the form of a reverse one-two. Rather than throwing the traditional jab to right hand combination, Barboza began with the right hand so he could disguise the left hand that followed.

It was a low-output fight, and so Barboza's superior activity and pushing of the pace made a substantial difference in some of the rounds. Catterall landed the harder punches, however, he was ultimately outworked and out-landed by Barboza.

Barboza is now the mandatory challenger for Teofimo Lopez's WBO super lightweight title. Should Lopez move up to welterweight, Barboza — as interim champion — will be upgraded to full WBO world champion.

For Catterall, who admitted in his post-fight interview that his performance was simply not good enough by his standards, it will likely be a rebuilding process to return to the title scene.
