Meninga rules Hayne out of RLWC contention

Mal Meninga has ruled Jarryd Hayne out of contention for the Kangaroos' Rugby League World Cup squad.

The code-hopping fullback has had a controversial year for the Titans, who recently sacked coach Neil Henry.

Hayne, 29, has scored eight tries from 16 NRL games either side of two tries from three State of Origin appearances.

But that has not been enough to satisfy Meninga, given Hayne plays out of position for Australia.

"From my point of view, I'm one of three selectors, but in my mind Jarryd hasn't done enough to make the Kangaroos side this year," the coach told 7 News on Friday.

Hayne was a solid servant for Australia at the 2013 World Cup, scoring nine tries in five games.

But it appears he is set to represent Fiji at the tournament for a second time.

He took the Bati to the semi-finals of the 2008 edition, scoring three tries in four games.

The former Eels star famously won his two Dally M medals in the seasons after his World Cup performances.

The 2017 Rugby League World Cup will be live and free on the screens of Channel 7.
