Hayne shuns Titans for former teammates

Jarryd Hayne has been filmed heading out to dinner with former Eels teammates, despite not turning up for the Titans clash on Thursday night.

The high-profile Titans fullback was ruled out of the clash against his former team with an ankle injury, and therefore wasn't in attendance for the clash in Sydney.

However the $1.2 million-dollar man was filmed later in the weekend dining with former Eels teammate Corey Norman and others at a Sydney restaurant.

The fact that he still travelled to Sydney but didn't attend the match when his teammates most needed the support, raised the ire of panellists on Fox League's Weekend Wrap.

"I think if there is any leadership in amongst Jarryd, or any want for leadership, he would have been there, he would have been in the sheds,” premiership-winning hooker Michael Ennis said.

"And he would have been that presence for those younger guys that look up to Jarryd. He is their marquee man and they are going through a tough time, so show your face and show your support.

"It doesn’t matter if you don’t get along with your coach, but these are your teammates. These are the guys you go and bleed with and give everything for every weekend.

"For me personally, when you’re injured, especially someone of Jarryd’s stature, being in and around the change room, giving advice to the younger guys pre-game, and showing that presence of, ‘I actually care,’ and they’ve had a rough week.

"They’ve had a horrendous week off the field, with everything that’s going on."

Sam Burgess backed up Ennis, saying he should have been at the ground if he was in the same city.

"It’s a tough one as a current player to comment too much on but listen, if you’re injured and you’re in Sydney and your team are playing, you should be at the game," Burgess said.

Hayne's non-attendance is yet another sign of the rapidly deteriorating relationship between Hayne and coach Neil Henry, who is expected to be sacked by the Titans over the next few days.

However, senior Gold Coast forward Kevin Proctor says coach Henry has shown he's still the man for the job and insists he has the support of all players.

"I reckon he's the right man for the job ... we're all backing him as players and I'm hoping the board does that too." Proctor said.

Proctor said reports Henry and Hayne, as well other players, were at odds was a "media twist up".

"He (Hayne) is a great player and we benefit from having both (he and Henry) at the club," Proctor said.

"Hopefully they can sort out their differences but I don't think there's much there to sort out.

"It's been a bit of a media twist up to be honest and I'm sure they can work it out."

Queensland Origin coach Kevin Walters is being touted as a possible replacement at the Titans, but Proctor argued Henry's resilience under fire in recent days strengthened his case.

"I reckon he's handled it really well to be honest," Proctor said.

"He's been getting hammered by the press and I feel sorry for him; he's not the one out there doing the tackling or the running.

"Our bad performances have been backlashing on him and he doesn't deserve it."
