Le Quesne strike sees off Camberley as Bulls close on top two
Jonny Le Quesne's first-time finish was enough for Jersey Bulls to see off Camberley Town 1-0 on Tuesday.
The game was one of three the Bulls had in hand as they chase promotion into the Southern League and they now trail second-placed AFC Whyteleafe by three points and leaders Redhill by six, having played two games less than both their title rivals.
The visitors would have expected to beat 17th-placed Camberley and dominated proceedings but a scrappy affair was not helped by the pitch at Krooner Park.
With few clear-cut chances, the best opportunity before the goal saw defender Harry Curtis volley over the bar following a corner in the 14th minute.
As the Bulls struggled to break down the hosts' low block, set-piece situations looked their best bet for a breakthrough and so it proved from a 35th-minute corner.
Forward Le Quesne hit a perfectly-timed strike from outside the box after a clearing header fell into his path to give the islanders a deserved lead.
The game was also a chance for new January signing Paul McKay to make his full debut for the Bulls since arriving from Scottish League Two side Clyde.
The Scotsman was involved in a clever one-two with Rai Dos Santos in the opening 10 minutes of the second half but Camberley keeper Dom West latched onto it first.
West then pulled off a strong save at the near post to deny Toby Ritzema after 72 minutes as Bulls had to settle for grinding out their 22nd league win in Surrey.
