Jasmine Jasudavicius has title hopes but eyes realistic UFC 315 in Montreal, too
Jasmine Jasudavicius would love to think about a UFC title shot, but in lieu of that knows she has some wide-ranging options on the table.
Jasudavicius has four straight wins, including three straight at flyweight since she returned there after a one-off bantamweight bonus-winning submission. And her most recent resume listing was a win over a former title challenger, which ups the stock for the Canadian big time.
Jasudavicius (13-3 MMA, 7-2 UFC) outworked Mayra Bueno Silva (10-5-1 MMA, 5-5-1 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 250 in Saudi Arabia. Silva was just a year removed from a fight with Raquel Pennington for the then-vacant bantamweight belt.
Would Jasudavicius, who will turn 36 in March, take her four-fight winning streak into a title fight with flyweight champ Valentina Shevchenko? Of course she would.
"I just want the opportunity to fight for the belt, and I believe I can get it – I think I could fulfill that quest. I would love to fight Shevchenko," Jasudavicius recently told MMA Junkie Radio.
But she's realistic, too. Shevchenko has contenders Manon Fiorot and Erin Blanchfield waiting in the wings, for starters. She's likely to fight Fiorot next. Jasudavicius would have to leapfrog them both.
And while she hoped to take a break after Saudi Arabia, she would forgo it for the right situation.
"Any (short-notice) opportunity that would be like that, I would jump on," she said. "I don't need a rest that bad. I've only been in this sport less than 10 years. That's why I can power through. I just want to rest because I believe that if I do take a little bit of a rest, the sand will be able to settle and I'll be even better."
The most likely scenario for Jasudavicius is that rest she hoped for – and then the potential for a spot on the UFC's return to her home country of Canada on May 10. That event is set for Montreal and will be the promotion's first time there in 10 years.
Sign her up, Jasudavicius said.
"I know with the momentum that's going on, and UFC coming to Montreal in May ... I feel like there could be a possibility of some type of a big opportunity for me," she said. "That's what I'm about. I think that's what life is – jumping on big opportunities. I'm excited to see it."
