Widow's devastating revelation about Aussie golf star's final moments

Jarrod Lyle’s widow Briony has broken down in a heartbreaking interview about her husband’s tragic death.

Revealing new details about the beloved Aussie golfer’s final moments, Briony couldn’t hold back the tears in an interview with Carrie Bickmore on The Project on Wednesday night.

Jarrod Lyle died in August 2018 at just 36 after a recurrence of acute myeloid leukaemia.

The father of two made the heart-wrenching decision to end treatment and go into palliative care, dying eight days later.

Approaching the one-year anniversary of her husband’s death, Briony revealed how daughters Lusi and Jemma dealt with the tragedy unfolding around them.

“We made the decision to start palliative care and drove home early that morning and had to wait till Lusi woke up and I had to say to her that the medicine is not working and that daddy is going to die,” Briony said.

“It was immediate sadness for her, which I had never seen before.

“She walked into his hospital room which she had been into so many times before and just walked over and held his hand.

“In the corner of his room there is a little whiteboard and there is a section that said ‘do you have any questions for the doctor’? And she wrote ‘why isn’t the medicine working’?”

Jarrod’s final moments

A winner of two professional tournaments, Lyle returned to golf in 2013 having beaten cancer a second time.

However he quit golf for good in 2017 after a third diagnosis.

Briony opened up about the devastating moment Jarrod slipped away.

“He was in a coma and had been for a couple of days so we all made a point of being there and we put the television on … and put the bed down and it was Anh Do’s Brush with Fame and it was yourself,” she told Bickmore.

“It was the episode of you, and you got to the point where you were talking about sometimes you see Olly (Bickmore’s son) from behind and he reminds you of Greg (Bickmore’s former husband who died from cancer) … and Jarrod’s aunty said to me ‘Bri it’s time’, and he died.”

Lyle overcame leukaemia as a 17-year-old before suffering a recurrence in 2012.

He won that battle and made an incredible return to professional golf at the Australian Masters in November 2013.

His death sparked an outpouring of grief around the golfing world.

In the days and weeks following the tragedy, players around the world paid tribute to their combatant and friend by wearing yellow hats and ribbons to raise awareness for leukaemia.
