Jack Ginnivan traded to Hawthorn amid huge Collingwood drama

The 20-year-old was quick to delete the post after reports broke of a potential move.

Collingwood has announced Jack Ginnivan has signed with Hawthorn on Wednesday, 24 hours after he deleted a story from the Magpies headquarters. Ginnivan was believed to be staying put in 2024 with the AFL premiership winners until a chaotic hour on Tuesday prompted chaos in the AFL trade whirlwind.

SEN's Sam Edmund reported Collingwood were set to listen to offers from rival clubs for Ginnivan. At a similar time the news broke, Ginnivan took to social media - clearly unaware of the reports - and posted an Instagram story that read: 'Locked in'.

He appeared to be at Collingwood headquarters in a training session. Ginnivan deleted the story moments later and also deleted photos from his account. The damning move comes as reports suggest the 20-year-old feels Collingwood are pushing him out the door in a tough move.

But on Wednesday afternoon, Collingwood confirmed Ginnivan would leave the club for pick 33, Hawthorn's future second round pick and Hawthorn's future third pick.

After a turbulent 12 months for Ginnivan, the Magpies were weighing up his trade request with the 20-year-old still having a season to run on his contract. Hawthorn, who finished 16th this year, have lost young forward Tyler Brockman to West Coast and will be without veteran goalsneak Chad Wingard for most of 2024. And they eventually signed Ginnivan on Wednesday.

This week, the 2023 AFL champions secured small forward Lachie Schultz from Fremantle. This only added increased interest around whether Collingwood would keep Ginnivan.

The 20-year-old was a breakout star in 2022 having kicked 40 goals and became the target of rival fans. However, he only made 14 appearances in 2023 with five of those coming as a substitute.

Craig McRae's damning call after AFL premiership win

There was clearly frustration with Gannivan at Collingwood with coach Craig McRae taking a swipe at the 20-year-old after the AFL final.

"Read the room, Jack," McRae said in his post-grand final press conference when asked about Ginnivan's night at the races. "You've got to grow up, but you've got to make mistakes to learn from them."

Despite McRae's public annoyance, Ginnivan went to Collingwood's Mad Monday celebrations dressed as a jockey.

No deals can officially be completed on Wednesday until 3pm, with the trade window to close at 7.30pm.
