Sam Kerr is one of the most recognisable sportspeople in Australia, even more-so now as Matildas mania sweeps across the country ahead of their Women's World Cup semi-final match against England. With her Chelsea F.C. contract, national team captaincy, and long-term Nike and EA Sports endorsements, she’s also one of the most well-paid.

According to the Australian Financial Review, Kerr will earn a whopping AU$3.3 million in 2023.

With her Chelsea contract worth a reported AU$600,000 per season and a 13-year Nike partnership supposedly worth AU$1 million, Kerr easily out-earns her Australian teammates, who take home more like $200,000 to $400,000 each year – an income that includes their sponsorships and non-Australian contracts.

Kerr was even ranked number one in the EA FIFA Women’s World Cup ratings in 2023, and became the first female football player to feature on the cover of the popular video game.

Still, Kerr’s AU$3 million salary pales in comparison to her top male counterparts. France’s star player 23-year-old Kylian Mbappé is expected to earn nearly AU$200 million this season, according to Forbes.

Similarly, according to research by Oddspedia there’s a massive wage gap between the Australian men’s and women’s national teams. While the Socceroos are paid more than AU$830,000, the Matildas’ average is a little under AU$120,000.
