DC's upcoming Supergirl movie, starring House of the Dragon's Milly Alcock, has just received a major update.

Deadline reports that the film, which will be based on the comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, will be shot later in the year, after production on James Gunn's Superman concludes.

Furthermore, Craig Gillespie of I, Tonya and Cruella fame is in talks to direct the project.

It's not confirmed yet, but with plans to shoot later this year and release in July next summer, it may not be too long until it is.

Gunn previously spoke about the story this film will adapt, stating: "Superman is a guy sent to Earth and raised by loving parents, where Supergirl in this story, she is a character raised on a chunk of Krypton.

"She watched everybody around her perish in some terrible way, so she's a much more jaded character."

Gunn's Superman film sees The Politician's and Hollywood's David Corenswet as The Man of Steel, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel's Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and the X-Men franchise's Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

The new Superman is set to be the first film in Gunn's new DC Universe shared continuity. It is expected to be followed by The Authority — about a team of superpowered individuals who take matters into their own hands — and The Brave and the Bold — about Bruce Wayne's son Damian and his adventures as the new Robin.

Both those projects are planned to release before Supergirl does, while films based on Swamp Thing and Teen Titans are set to follow afterwards.

Supergirl is scheduled to release on July 11, 2025.
