The hilarious but real reason Blades Brown didn't appear on Golf Channel's 'Happy Hour'
Happy Hour was canceled for Blades Brown on Friday.
The 17-year-old Brown, who made his pro debut last month at The American Express, made his first PGA Tour cut at the Mexico Open at VidantaWorld and Golf Channel’s Smylie Kaufman promoted on social media that Brown would be joining him on the network’s telecast during a segment of Kaufman’s Happy Hour.
Not so fast. Brown never appeared on the Friday afternoon show. So, what happened? It seems as if a sponsor got cold feet. Brown’s appearance got nixed in the lead-up to his appearance because “Happy Hour” is sponsored this season by Michelob Ultra, the official beer of the PGA Tour, and Brown isn’t of drinking age.
On his podcast “The Smylie Show,” Kaufman joked, “I don’t I.D. at the desk. That was obviously a bummer to not get to talk to him because I think everybody would have really gotten a chance to see the lighter side of this kid.”
Excited to have these two on @GolfChannel @NBCSports 'Happy Hour' today! Plus, we’ll be joined by 17-year-old Blades Brown, fresh off his first made cut as a pro! pic.twitter.com/bc6yJk63Lc

On paper, it makes sense why the network, or the sponsor, would be concerned about promoting alcohol during an interview with a minor. Kaufman told Golfweek that about 20-30 minutes before Brown was scheduled to join him on the set of “Happy Hour,” he “heard a voice in my ear,” telling him that Brown wouldn’t be on the show. It’s unclear who made the decision. Tommy Roy, NBC’s executive producer of golf, was off and said Chris McGwire was at the helm. An NBC spokesperson declined to comment.
Brown, whose claim to fame is that he was the medalist at the U.S. Junior and U.S. Amateur, joining Tiger Woods and Bobby Clampett as the only players to medal in both the U.S. Junior and U.S. Amateur, shot rounds of 68-69 to make the cut south of the border and finished T-34. Kaufman said he met Brown on the eve of the Mexico Open.
“He’s so confident in himself but in a great way. He’s this bubbly 17-year-old kid who is happy to be on the PGA Tour. It was kind of a breath of fresh air,” Kaufman said. “Met him on 17 on Wednesday. He said, ‘Hey, come here, I’m about to hit this sick flop shot. Watch this.’ He hits this spinny chip shot. I was immediately a fan of this kid. I’m Team Blades Brown.”
Guests on Friday’s Happy Hour included Ben Griffin, Michael Kim and Joel Dahmen. It’s not unusual for a player to change his mind about appearing on the live interview segment, and Brown wasn’t the only late change last week. Jake Knapp was scheduled to appear but shot 1-over 72 on Friday and departed for the airport. He ended up making the cut, and the network ran a feature on Knapp on the weekend. But if you're expecting Brown, the Tour's latest whiz kid, to appear on Happy Hour anytime soon, you'll be left with warm beer.
