Highly ranked Hawaiian course wraps up renovation
Robert Trent Jones Jr. has completed a renovation of the golf course at Mauna Kea Resort at Kohala Coast, Hawaii. The course opened in 1964 with a design by Robert Trent Jones Sr., and the layout was later renovated by Rees Jones, brother of Robert Trent Jones Jr.
Before this recent renovation that wrapped up in December, Mauna Kea Golf Course was ranked by Golfweek’s Best as the No. 3 public-access course in Hawaii and was tied for No. 176 among all modern courses in the U.S.
The scope of the renovation included:
Fairways and greens re-grassed with paspalum.
Redesigned bunkers.
Restored holes, including the over-the-ocean par-3 third.
Commitment to sustainability with the drought-resistant paspalum, native landscaping and other management practices.
Mauna Kea Golf Course is part of the 1,800-acree oceanfront resort that includes the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort and the Mauna Kea Residences, among other amenities. The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is undergoing a multi-phased $200 million renovation that will see the redesign of its 252 guest rooms and the addition of a spa and wellness center as well as many other upgrades.
