We're a quarter of the way into 2024 and blockbuster season is officially under way with some huge releases over March.

As well as the long-awaited arrival of Dune: Part Two, we've also had new movies to enjoy in the Ghostbusters and MonsterVerse franchises. A certain Kung Fu Panda has also made a return to the big screen after an eight-year absence.

But which movie came out on top at the box office? In our regular monthly column, Digital Spy takes a look back at the past month to reveal the biggest box-office hits, as well as an update on the highest-grossing movies of the year so far.

If you've been following the box office, it perhaps won't surprise you that we'll start with...

Dune: Part Two

US: $254,126,488

The first Dune movie made more than $400 million worldwide, a big enough hit to confirm the sequel. Dune: Part Two has already raced past this result and likely made more than enough to confirm a third movie.

It won't reach $1 billion, but it's still an impressive performance for a near-three-hour sci-fi epic.

Dune 2 is comfortably the biggest movie of 2024 so far (more on that below) and is already the highest-grossing movie ever for Austin Butler, while it'll soon become Timothée Chalamet's most successful movie too.

Kung Fu Panda 4

US: $153,781,205

Kung Fu Panda 4 might still be the lowest-grossing movie of the series so far, but its performance has taken the entire franchise past the $2 billion mark at the box office.

At the US box office, the fourth movie has overtaken Kung Fu Panda 3 and will soon surpass Kung Fu Panda 2. Worldwide, it's got some way to go to overtake the third movie's $521.2 million result, but it has only just opened in the likes of the UK and France so its international tally will continue to rise.

The highest-grossing movie of the series to date is Kung Fu Panda 2 with $665.7 million, which the fourth movie is unlikely to match.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

US: $75,305,771

Things were looking great for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire after its better-than-expected $45 million opening in the US took the entire franchise past the $1 billion mark.

But things are starting to look increasingly frosty for the new movie as it dropped a steep 65.4% in its second weekend in the US, largely due to the huge opening of Godzilla x Kong (more on that soon).

After two weekends, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has at least crossed $100 million worldwide. However, it still has more than $90 million to go to even match Ghostbusters: Afterlife's $204.3 million result, which is currently the lowest-grossing Ghostbusters movie.

Without new blockbuster competition in the coming weeks, the new movie could rebound at the box office though.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

US: $87,757,888

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire might have been saddled with some of the worst reviews of the MonsterVerse so far, but that didn't stop it from becoming a monster hit after just one weekend of release.

The new movie managed to land the biggest worldwide debut of the year to date, ahead of Dune 2, with $195.1 million – and it's now passed $200 million globally too ahead of its second weekend.

Its $80 million debut in the US is the second-biggest of the series, behind Godzilla's $93.2 million, but it stands a chance of becoming the highest-grossing MonsterVerse movie yet. Kong: Skull Island's $568.7 million is the best result to date so Godzilla x Kong has a way to go yet.

But if it holds well at the box office with minimal blockbuster competition incoming, it also has some new international openings to come that could push it towards that figure.
