Hawthorn forward Sam Butler will be sidelined for the rest of the 2024 season after he suffered a horror leg fracture in the VFL on Sunday.

The 21-year-old, who has played 19 senior games, underwent surgery on his left leg on Monday after he was forced to wait more than half an hour for an ambulance on the ground at the Box Hill City Oval.

Play resumed after the long break, with the third quarter taking almost 55 minutes in duration.

Butler’s injury comes as the Hawks remain without attacking threats Luke Breust (groin) and Nick Watson (ankle).

Hawthorn football boss Rob McCartney said he was “extremely confident” the former No. 23 pick would make a full recovery.

“While Sam’s injury yesterday was serious, I’m pleased to report that his surgery today was a success,” McCartney said.

“Unfortunately he has an extended recovery and rehab period ahead of him, but we are extremely confident Sam will make a full recovery.

“Sam is a much loved member of our playing group and his teammates are rallying closely around him. We will all be there to support him through this.”

Box Hill’s clash against Sydney was also Hawks forward Chad Wingard’s first game back since he ruptured his achilles in August last year.

Wingard booted two goals from eight disposals before he made his planned exit from the game at halftime.

Former Sydney captain Luke Parker played for the Swans after overcoming a broken arm, and sealed his return to the senior level this weekend with 34 disposals, six tackles and five clearances.
