Harry Garside shares huge personal news as he reveals new sporting pursuit post-Olympics

The Aussie fan favourite revealed he has unexpectedly found love.

Australian Olympic boxer Harry Garside revealed he has unexpectedly found love as he considers walking away from professional boxing to pursue a new sporting venture after his shock loss at the Paris Olympics. The 27-year-old made a triumphant comeback to the sport after being cleared of allegations of domestic violence last year but lost his opening bout against flashy Hungarian Richard Kovacs.

Post-fight Garside was seen hunched over and distraught out the back of the arena. Speaking to Channel Nine, Garside admitted he felt like a failure and that he let Australia down, having exited the Paris Olympics after his first fight. “I’m sure the next month or two will be quite challenging, quite hard. I fear for my mind, it gets the better of me. I feel like I’ve let myself down and let Australia down mate, but what do you do?”

But now back in Australia and with time to stomach the defeat, Garside admitted while it was tough to come to terms with his 20-year journey being over in just nine minutes, his focus is now on his new dreams and new romance. Garside says he unexpectedly found love after moving to Sydney’s Bondi Beach and is excited for the life ahead of him.

"I had this weird ambition that maybe I could walk with giants and I guess on that 20-year journey, I finally got to a destination where I believed I can,” Garside told Nova 96.9 on Tuesday. “It’s a nice journey, nice evolution. I guess the biggest thing I took from it is to set big, audacious goals … but on the journey, you end up feeling like you can achieve them.

"Throughout that process, I actually fell in love … so it happened so unexpectedly which I think is the best kind of love … when you’re not searching for it but it just stumbled into my life,” he continued. “She’s originally from Sydney, but she is currently living in London, so I am pretty excited for her to get back at the end of the year … she’s definitely worth the wait."

While many believed the latest loss was just another bump in the road for Garside's boxing career, the 28-year-old revealed while he will always box for enjoyment, the Olympic defeat could be his last ever professional bout. Garside says while he is unsure what the future holds for him, in the short term at least he wants to try his hand at some triathlons.

"I am just trying to keep fit … The decisions I made when I failed were negative, and I’m just trying my best to do more positive things," Garside said.

"So, I’m training every day. I’m staying fit. I want to do some triathlons over the summer. I love boxing, so I’ll always continue on boxing, not sure professional, next Olympics, not sure to walk away altogether. But I always love doing it, so I’ll continue doing it until I lose the love for it."
