Day suffers late setback in Australian Open first round

Sydney youngster Cameron Davis has upstaged former world No.1 Jason Day to take an early lead in the first round of the Australian Open golf.

The 22-year-old collected six birdies in the first eight holes before his play stabilised with one bogey and three more birdies, closing at eight under par.

Day, starting on the 10th, collected three birdies in his first four holes and his round was on track until the penultimate hole.

A birdie on the seventh made way for a double bogey on the eighth, dragging him back to four under, before a birdie on the ninth settled him in at five under par to close.

Queenslander Anthony Quayle was five under with four holes to play, while Stephen Leaney, Jason Norris, Nick Cullen and Taylor Macdonald were also among the chasers.

Former US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy was sent back to the pack despite five birdies after a bogey on the 16th and a double bogey on the third left him at two under after 18.

Day was tipping a birdie blitz at the 102nd Open if conditions at The Australian Golf Club in Sydney weren't too tough, and it was looking that way early as 36 players quickly moved into red figures.

World No.2 and defending champion Jordan Spieth will tee off just after midday AEDT alongside fellow US PGA Tour stars Cameron Smith and 2015 winner Matt Jones.
