Was Bill Murray USA’s secret Ryder Cup weapon?

The atmosphere on the final day of Team USA’s Ryder Cup victory against Europe was absolutely electric, and Bill Murray had a huge part to play in it.

The Hollywood actor and golf super-fan whipped the parochial crowd into a frenzy, after starting an epic chant at Hazeltine that would have sent tingles down the players’ spines.

It couldn’t have been any simpler, but boy was it effective.

Decked out in his multi-coloured bucket hat, Murray bellowed “America,” to the group of supporters sitting in the adjacent grandstand to him.

Echoing back came the response “America,” as both sets of fans repeated the chant progressively faster and louder until it resembled something like the Viking Clap.

If any proof was needed that the guy with his back to the camera was indeed the one and only Bill Murray, another front-on shot of the movie star removed any doubt.

The incredible moment happened just before Patrick Reed and Rory McIlroy teed off on the first hole, and set the tone for one of the most memorable battles ever seen in the Ryder Cup.
