Rory McIlroy had to play the rest of his third round at Royal Troon without a 3-wood after snapping the head off it in anger.

It hasn't been the best week for the Irishman and it all boiled over when he shanked a shot and smashed his club.

After watching his shot veer off into the rough stuff, he threw his club into the course in disgust, ripping up a divot and destroying it.

"I let one go to the right on the previous hole and I did it again there," he said.

"No one likes to make the same mistake twice."
