Women's golf history on the line in Aussie family affair
Just a week out from the Masters, young Australian amateur Julienne Soo is poised to tee up in the first-ever women’s tournament hosted by Augusta National.
A college star with Oklahoma University, 21-year-old Soo is the sole Australian in the elite 72-player field for the inaugural Augusta National Women’s Amateur starting on Wednesday (Thursday AEDT).
While the first two rounds of the 54-hole event are played on the nearby Champions Retreat course, the remaining 30 players after Thursday’s cut will play the last round on Masters venue Augusta National on Saturday.
“It’s a very big carrot,” Soo told Golf Australia.

“I do want to get to the last 30 but I don’t want to think too much about it because , if I put too much pressure on myself, I will get too nervous.”
Regardless of the cut, all of the players will be allowed a practice round on Augusta National on Friday.
Soo has her parents in town for the week with her dad to caddie.

She believes her experience growing up playing Melbourne’s sandbelt courses will be a big help as she feels comfortable on Augusta’s notoriously slick and sloping greens.
It’s already been big few days for the players as they prepared.
“We’ve just been treated so good,” said Soo, who was delighted by a “pretty cool” tournament gift of a Tiffany bracelet.
