Pebble Beach Resorts in California has announced the timeline for a renovation to the Links at Spanish Bay by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner.

The course will close March 18, 2026, and is scheduled to reopen in the spring of 2027 a few months before the resort's Pebble Beach Golf Links hosts the U.S. Open.  Also included in the project will be the reconstruction of the Spanish Bay boardwalk that was damaged in recent storms.

The Links at Spanish Bay was opened in 1987. The original layout was designed by the trio of architects Robert Trent Jones Jr., former USGA president Sandy Tatum and PGA Tour player Tom Watson.

“Working with Pebble Beach Company in a world-class setting like this is a can’t-miss opportunity for our team,” Hanse said in a media release announcing the schedule. “Golf on the Monterey Peninsula is an unrivaled experience, and we are thrilled at the opportunity to put our stamp on one of the most spectacular backdrops in the world.”

The media release went on to say that Hanse “will lead the construction process with the goal to elevate the 40-year-old course to the pedigree of the other championship courses in the Del Monte Forest. Hanse’s guiding tenets will be to transform Spanish Bay from an 1980s-era Scottish-inspired links to a modern California coastal masterpiece while remaining within the existing development footprint. The renovation will also further enhance the golf course’s environmental standing and upgrade its infrastructure for the next generation.”

The Links at Spanish Bay ties for No. 7 on the Golfweek’s Best 2024 ranking of public-access courses in California. It also tied for No. 56 in 2024 among all resort courses in the U.S.
