Getafe sign Mason Greenwood after Manchester United investigation

LaLiga club Getafe have signed Mason Greenwood on loan from Manchester United.

The former England striker is set for a return to football 18 months after being suspended by United amid allegations of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault.

The Crown Prosecutive Service ended its own case in February of this year following the “withdrawal of key witnesses”, and United confirmed it would conduct its own investigation.

Last month, the Premier League club revealed that Greenwood’s future would lie away from Old Trafford despite a statement outlining their belief that the 21-year-old “did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged”.

Greenwood denied the charges and released a statement of his own insisting he “fully accepts” that he made mistakes but that he “did not do the things I was accused of”.

On transfer deadline day, the player joined Madrid-based side Getafe until the end of the season on loan. He still has two years left to run on his United contract.

It has been reported that Getafe are making only a small contribution to his wages with United focused on ensuring Greenwood can resume his career. Serie A side Lazio had also been linked with a move for him.

A United statement on the move read: “The move enables Greenwood to begin to rebuild his career away from Manchester United.

“The club will continue to offer its support to Mason and his family during this period of transition.”
