Germany vs Netherlands LIVE!
Germany took a big step towards the Nations League quarter-finals by dismissing the Netherlands 1-0 in Munich. Julian Nagelsmann’s extended their lead at the top of Nations League Group A3 to five points after Jamie Leweling’s debut goal clinched victory at the Allianz Arena.
In a patchy game where both teams were missing a number of first-team players, Leweling fired home in the second half to secure victory for the hosts. Germany should probably have won by more than just the one-goal margin, while the defeat will be all the more frustrating for the Netherlands after Hungary’s 2-0 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina left them both on five points.
Cody Gakpo and then Xavi Simons both hit the bar for the Dutch, but they were far from their best. Germany have all but wrapped up top spot, while the Netherlands’ next fixture at home to Hungary next month looks pivotal in deciding which team will finish second. Head to head record
18:09 , Jamie Dickenson
Germany and the Netherlands have one of the longest-standing rivalries in international football, deeply rooted in Dutch anti-German sentiment following World War II.
The 1974 World Cup final in which Germany beat the Netherlands 2-1 was a bitter loss for the Dutch, who had to wait 14 years for revenge when they reversed that scoreline in the semi-finals of Euro 1988 on route to winning the tournament.
Germany have had the better of things in recent years, remaining unbeaten from their last three fixtures with the Netherlands.
Germany wins: 17
Draws: 18
Netherlands wins: 12
