'That is garbage': New rules controversy erupts in IPL

Just 48 hours after the Mankad controversy that rocked the cricket world, the IPL has witnessed another rules furore.

And Kings XI Punjab captain Ravi Ashwin was caught up in the drama again.

Kings XI were taking on Kolkata Knight Riders on Wednesday when the controversy occurred.

Knight Riders skipper Dinesh Karthik was left seething when umpires awarded Kings XI four overthrows despite protests the ball should have been dead.

A Kolkota player fielded the ball and immediately tossed it out to Andre Russell at mid on, probably so he could shine it and give it back to the bowler.

However Russell lost the ball in the lights and it sailed past him to the boundary.

Because the ball had never been returned to the wicketkeeper – the usual method for making the ball dead – umpires deemed the ball was still live and awarded the four runs.

Karthik and his teammates were fuming, protesting animatedly to umpires, however their pleas fell on deaf ears.

Former Aussie captain Michael Clarke slammed the decision.

“That is garbage,” he said. “That shouldn’t be four runs.”

“You see that happen regularly.

“The ball was dead, they weren’t running, both batsmen were in their crease.”

Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith then took a slight dig at Ashwin, who wasn’t on the field at the time but came down to the boundary to speak with the fourth official.

“You have to wonder why Ashwin got out of his seat to get involved, it wasn’t necessary,” he said in commentary.

Ashwin was at the centre of major debate on Tuesday when he ran out Jos Buttler at the non-striker’s end by way of Mankad.

The controversial practice immediately sparked uproar and was widely condemned by the cricketing world.
