Camila Giorgi in hot water at French Open over detail on dress

Italian tennis star Camila Giorgi was at the centre of bizarre controversy at the French Open on Sunday when an umpire pulled her up over a detail on her dress.

Giorgi caused a huge upset when she took down seventh seed Aryna Sabalenka 4-6 6-0 6-1 to advance to the fourth round at Roland Garros for the first time in her career.

However the 28th seed found herself in hot water before the match even started.

Giorgi was spoken to by the chair umpire, with the official appearing to question her about an advertising logo on her dress.

The umpire was reportedly unhappy with the size of the logo for sponsor DeLonghi, and apparently asked Giorgi of she could change it.

“I don’t have any change, this is my only dress. I played with it before,” Giorgi could be heard saying.

According to leading tennis commentator Jose Morgado, the umpire told Giorgi she could play the match but would talk to the 'office' about the logo after the match.

Giorgi had posted a photo to social media in the outfit before the match, tagging kitchenware suppliers DeLonghi.

The Italian has worn the same outfit earlier in the tournament without the logo.

Coco Gauff and Leylah Fernandez continue teen charge

Meanwhile, teenage sensations Leylah Fernandez and Coco Gauff have put down a marker for the next generation and could meet in the semi-finals at Roland Garros.

Fernandez, the US Open runner-up, reached the last eight for the first time with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Amanda Anisimova on Sunday.

Gauff claimed a quarter-final spot for the second-straight year when she destroyed Belgian Elise Mertens 6-4 6-0.

The 19-year-old Fernandez had more than twice as many winners (35) as unforced errors (17), and continued her run of impressive returning.

The No.17 seed broke Anisimova six times and has now won 23 of her opponents' service games in her four matches in Paris.

The youngest player to win a WTA title in 2022, Fernandez will next play Italy's Martina Trevisan.

The in-form Trevisan won the last four games to beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich 7-6 (12-10) 7-5 and reach the quarter-finals at Roland Garros for the second time.

Gauff, seeded one place lower than Fernandez at No.18, took a set to find her range before steamrolling 31st seed Mertens 6-4 6-0.

The 18-year-old Gauff, who won her maiden clay-court title at the Emilia-Romagna Open last year, has been growing fond of playing on the slow surface.

"I definitely feel confident on the court. I feel like it really suits my game," she said.

"And I feel like in the previous tournaments this clay season I had some good wins but it wasn't really any outstanding results.

"I feel like it gave me a lot to learn from, and I think I'm taking those tough matches that I lost this season and really learning from them and I guess showing that I'm doing better."

Gauff will now face Sloane Stephens, who returned to the quarter-finals for the first time since 2019 by beating Jil Teichmann 6-2 6-0.
