Beckenbauer to skip WC final in Rio

German football great Franz Beckenbauer will not be attending Sunday's (Monday AEST) World Cup final in Rio de Janeiro despite FIFA lifting his provisional ban.

Beckenbauer said he was "very annoyed" with the suspension imposed last month and later lifted, saying there were some people he would rather not meet at the Germany v Argentina final.

Beckenbauer captained West Germany to the 1974 World Cup title on home soil and was coach of the German team that won the title in 1990 in Italy, the last time Germany were crowned world champions.

"Of course I would have liked to have been there," Beckenbauer said in an interview published on the German football federation's website.

"(Federation president) Wolfgang Niersbach phoned me up again after the semi-final and urged me to come to Rio.

"I told him, that I have planned otherwise because there are some people I simply can't and won't see.

"As I have been doing so far I will be sitting in front of the television with my family, wearing hat, football shirt, scarf and all that goes with it."

Beckenbauer, 68, was suspended on June 13 for 90 days from all football-related activities for failing to respond to FIFA's ethics committee, which is investigating alleged corruption in the votes for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

The suspension was lifted on June 27 but the independent ethics committee is still investigating Beckenbauer.
