The Chileans, led by Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez, were no match for the five-time world champions as already-qualified Brazil coasted to a 3-0 win.
A double from Luis Suarez helped Uruguay to a 4-2 win over Bolivia that cemented second spot in the group.
Argentina went into their clash against Ecuador with their World Cup hopes hanging in the balance and things looked grim when the visitors went behind inside the first minute.
However, a Lionel Messi hat-trick turned the match on its head as the Argentinians rounded out a 3-1 win that saw them automatically qualify thanks to a third-place finish.
Colombia's 1-1 draw with Peru was enough for them to take fourth spot as the Peruvians ended up fourth and into a two-legged playoff against Oceania champions, New Zealand.
The USA only needed a draw against CONCACAF's bottom side Trinidad and Tobago to book their tickets to Russia but Bruce Arena's side crashed to a shock 2-1 defeat.
That result could still have seen the Americans go through but Panama's 2-1 win over second-placed Costa Rica saw them snatch the third automatic qualifying place.
Honduras then sealed a playoff date against the Socceroos after a dramatic late goal settled a thrilling 3-2 win against table-topping Mexico to snatch fourth spot off the Americans.
It meant the USA failed to qualify for the World Cup finals for the first time since 1986.
Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal and Antoine Griezmann's France booked spots at the 2018 World Cup finals on Tuesday while the Netherlands crashed out of contention.
Portugal beat Switzerland 2-0 in Lisbon thanks to a Johan Djourou own goal and an Andre Silva strike.
France needed goals from Griezmann and Olivier Giroud in a hard-fought 2-1 win over Belarus at the Stade de France.
