FIFA defends VAR despite Juric handball goal

FIFA boss Gianni Infantino has defended the video assistant referee (VAR) despite fresh controversy after Socceroos striker Tomi Juric's goal against Germany overnight.

A Tom Rogic shot deflected off Juric's arm towards Germany goalkeeper Bernd Leno, who fumbled the ball back into Juric's path.

The Australian No.9 slammed it home to bring the margin back to one goal at 3-2 but it was soon referred to the VAR to check for an offside infraction.

Juric was deemed onside, while the handball went ignored and unpunished under the VAR's current rules.

MATCH REPORT: Germany too good for Socceroos

PLAYER RATINGS: Every Socceroos player rated out of 10

"I am extremely happy with VAR so far," Infantino said in a statement released on the FIFA website.

"We have seen how video assistance has helped referees to make the correct decisions. That is what VAR is all about."

Portugal and Chile had goals disallowed for offside in their earlier Confederations Cup matches against Mexico and Cameroon respectively.

FIFA defended those decisions by releasing images for clarifation.

"The VAR tests used during this Confederations Cup are also helping us to improve the processes and fine-tune communication," Infantino said.

"What fans have been waiting for over so many years is finally happening. This is a milestone tournament. Video assistant refereeing is the future of modern football."

While Infantino continues to push for VAR to make its World Cup debut at next year's tournament, those on the field will push on.

The German goalkeeper Leno refused to blame Juric's handball for his slip that allowed the Australian to score.

"I think with the second goal it is obvious that I have to secure the ball, even if the Australian player touched it he was just one or two metres ahead of me," he said.
