Ryan Mason suffers skull fracture in head clash

Ryan Mason is in a stable condition after suffering a fractured skull in a sickening head clash this morning.

The Hull City midfielder was caught in a contest with Chelsea's Gary Cahill just 14 minutes into the match at Stamford Bridge, which finished 2-0 to the Premier League leaders.

He was treated on the field for eight minutes as doctors provided oxygen and stabilised his neck.

"The Club can confirm that Ryan Mason sustained a skull fracture in our fixture at Chelsea this afternoon," Hull said in a statement.

"He was taken to St Mary’s Hospital where he has undergone surgery. Ryan is in a stable condition and is expected to remain in hospital for the next few days.

"Everyone at the Club would like to express their sincere thanks for the excellent and swift care given to Ryan by both the Accident and Emergency department and Neurosurgery Unit at St Mary’s Hospital."

The incident with Mason brought back memories of then Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech suffering a fractured skull against Reading in October 2006.

Cech sported a rugby helmet upon his return in January 2007 and has worn one in every game since.
