First Victory, then the A-League: Brosque

Annihilating Melbourne Victory by 10 goals will still not be retribution for last season’s A-League Grand Final loss.

That’s the opinion of Sydney FC captain Alex Brosque who is chomping at the bit to take on the Victory again.

Melbourne were dominant in their 3-0 win in last season’s decider and have continued where they left off with impressive performances to date.

After Sydney FC’s unbeaten start to the campaign, this Saturday’s Big Blue is set to be a blockbuster.

Brosque told 7sport.com.au there only way to make up for last season is to win the competition.

“When I think about it we could beat Melbourne Victory 10-0 on Saturday and it won’t give us a grand final medal,” he said.

“The only way to make up for that is to win the grand final this year.

“Other than that it’s about beating Melbourne Victory this weekend as we see them as our biggest threat for the title.

“We are four points ahead of them at the moment and although they have a game in hand, if we win we make it seven points and psychologically that could be a huge factor for the rest of the season.”

The Sky Blues have improved their defence immensely this season conceding only two goals.

Brosque says his side’s focus continue to be remaining tight and limiting the chances of a dangerous Victory attacking line-up to be any chance of winning.

“Their biggest asset is their defence. They’re at their best when the opposition has the ball,” he said.

“As soon as you give the ball away they are so dominant and they punish you with the likes of (Besart) Berisha and (Kosta) Barbarouses.”

Pundits have hammered Sydney’s attacking force this season after only scoring six goals from five matches.

But the 32-year-old sent a message to the rest of the competition ahead of the Victory game.

“It’s nothing we are panicking about,” he said.

“I think with the players we have in attack, when we click it will all fall into place.

“As long as we can keep tight and not concede we are confident.”
