Entertaining on Mariners minds

A new club philosophy is set to turn Central Coast Mariners into the ultimate entertainment package of the A-League.

The Mariners had a disappointing 2014-15 season which saw them finish eighth just one year after winning the competition.

But new head coach Tony Walmsley told 7sport.com.au his side is working a new attacking style of football that is set to fill Central Coast Stadium.

“The club has established itself with a culture that really punches above its weight and has done exceptional things,” he said.

“The shift is in redefining the club as an entertainment platform, which means we need to go out with a bold playing style.

“That includes high tempo, high pressing and giving players the freedom to express themselves.

“We have always been about the fortress and I don’t want to lose that. Our job is to try and fill Central Coast Stadium bit by bit.”

Central to their attacking plans are exciting youngster Anthony Caceres and winger Fabio Fereira.

Walmsley, however, hasn’t forgotten his defence and is confident a mix of youth and experience will have the side in good stead when they open their season against the Perth Glory at Central Coast Stadium on October 10.

“With the approach we want to take it can leave you a little bit exposed at the back so you need to get defenders who are quite athletic,” he said.

“We have recruited Harry Ascroft and Jake McGing who are both great athletes to add to the experience of Eddie Bosnar which will all be able to defend in a one on one situation. That will allow us to play an attacking style of football.”
