Photos show the front of Eto'o's four-wheel drive completely smashed in, suggested that it was a high-impact collision.

Cameroonian journalist Martin Camus tweeted a picture of Eto'o's apparent destroyed motor alongside the caption: "The crushed car Samuel Eto'o was in.

"I can confirm that he is fine, we spoke again. Doctors taking care of additional examinations."

There is no record of injuries among the passagers of the other vehicle involved in the crash.

Cameroon star a legend in football

Eto'o is a legendary figure in Cameroon, with the former striker holding the mantle as the country's all-time leading goal scorer and second most-capped player in their history (56 goals in 118 games).

He won three Champions League titles (two with Barcelona and one with Inter Milan), including two alongside the likes of Ronaldinho, Lionel Messi and Thierry Henry in a Barcelona side regarded as one of the greatest club sides in history.

The Cameroonian also won a record four African Player of the Year awards in a glittering career that also included three Spanish league titles and one in Italy's Serie A.

Eto'o also positioned himself as a prominent figure in the fight against racism in football throughout his career.

His actions in 2006 are still remembered as a milestone when he threatened to leave the field in the middle of the game, fed up with the insults he received from the stands in Zaragoza.

Despite hanging up the boots, the 39-year-old is still an active part of football through his ambassadorial role on the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Earlier this year he was also one of the masters of ceremonies at the annual African Confederation awards gala.

Eto'o also has his own charity foundation which undertakes projects to improve the living conditions of children in West Africa.
