Aaron Finch's classy response to bizarre DRS gaffe
Australia captain Aaron Finch has defended the Decision Review System (DRS) despite being ruled out in a bizarre incident against India.
The crazy ball-tracking replay that sealed Finch’s fate in Ranchi hasn’t altered the captain’s positive view of the DRS.
Finch, who was trapped lbw on 93 during the third ODI, opted to review his dismissal.
There appeared to be a clear discrepancy between where the ball actually landed and where the simulated replay suggested it did.
Finch would almost certainly have been out regardless but the glitch captured the attention of fans plus past and present players from around the world.
Shane Warne pondered “what the hell was the DRS doing!” on Twitter, while Mark Waugh used the same platform to declare he couldn’t “see how on the earth that ball was hitting middle stump”.
What on earth has just happened with the Finch LBW? Ball tracker has the ball pitching somewhere completely different, and that sort of affects the trajectory doesn't it. Might still be out, but bizarre. #INDvAUS #Finch pic.twitter.com/fDyZR1X0p0

Just saw the replay of @AaronFinch5 dismissal ! What the hell was the DRS doing ! The ball pitched in a completely different spot, and agree – probably clipping leg not smashing into middle stump ! Mmmmm https://t.co/7Dnw0R03QJ

Ummm DRS. I’ve got no doubt Finchy’s LBW was out but I can’t see how on the earth that ball was hitting middle stump. Looked at best leg stump.

Finch LBW. Are we just gonna ignore the fact that ball tracking had it pitching in a totally different place to reality?
I saw it pitching middle, maybe even middle and off. Ball tracking had it pitching on leg.
Still out but pretty weird. #INDvsAUS

However, Finch wasn’t nearly as fussed.
“Not a great review, really,” Finch said, when asked what was running through his mind while watching the ball-tracking replay.
“The screen was a bit blocked – so I couldn’t tell exactly where it pitched.
“It’s one of those things, technology isn’t right all of the time is it? Your phone sometimes runs out of service.
“I think all in all it’s a pretty good system. It’s there for the absolute howler of a decision and mine certainly wasn’t that, by any stretch.”
The DRS will be in use at this year’s World Cup and such an error would obviously create more of a stir if it proved costly in a high-stakes game at the tournament.
