Ghana official condemned over 'shameful' act at World Cup

An official from Ghana's World Cup squad has been condemned by football fans who have taken to social media to condemn him for a "shameless" act after the African's pulsating World Cup victory against South Korea. Mohammed Kudus scored twice as Ghana beat the Koreans 3-2 in a wild encounter that keeps their World Cup hopes alive and leaves Paulo Bento's Korea side facing an early exit.

Korea coach Bento was red carded after the final whistle after a fiery confrontation with referee Anthony Taylor at the end of the match, with the Korean team complaining of a "lack of justice" after the official failed to let them take a late corner.

South Korean captain Son Heung-min was in tears at the end, knowing the loss leaves his sides hopes of progressing to the knockout stages on life support. Son was seen being consoled by several players as he slumped on the pitch with his head buried in his hands, seemingly inconsolable.

Despite the fact the Korean superstar was clearly distraught about the result and his nation's World Cup dreams taking a brutal hit, one member of Ghana's coaching staff thought it was appropriate to try and get a selfie with the Tottenham superstar. Son was in no mood for a photo and turned away from the Ghana official, whose actions were roundly panned by fans on social media.

“Did that Ghana coach just take a selfie with Son? Shame is actually free," one user said on Twitter. Another added: “Nah wanting a selfie with Son afterwards when he’s devastated is crazy."

A third wrote: “Absolutely shameless from that Ghanaian coach taking a selfie while Son crying.”

South Korea assistant coach Sergio Costa explained after the game why Son was so upset and why his coach Bento was so furious with the referee after the match. Costa replied: “The reaction is a reaction of a person and a group which feels a lack of fairness at the end of the match.

“It is a normal reaction of someone that did all they could to win, and were not able to do so. I believe we should be sad, and feel a lack of justice at the end of this match. The result is totally unfair. Not even a tie was fair. We clearly deserved the win.”

Explaining Bento’s outburst towards the referee, Costa added: “It was related to the fact that we thought a different criteria was used. In the first half, they let a very similar situation be played, and in the second half, when we had an opportunity for a corner kick, the referee took that opportunity away from us.

“Paulo reacted, I was close by, and he said nothing which was inappropriate to the referee. It was a lack of fairness.” Bento will now miss his side’s final group game against his home country Portugal.

Ghana win five-goal thriller against Korea

Mohammed Salisu opened the scoring against the run of play midway through the first half at Education City Stadium and Ajax midfielder Kudus doubled Ghana's lead. However, Korea, who looked toothless in the first half, roared back after the break, pulling level through a quick-fire double from forward Cho Gue-sung either side of the hour mark.

Ghana looked shell-shocked as the Korean fans celebrated wildly but they were back in front in the 68th minute when Kudus finished calmly at the back post after his teammate Inaki Williams failed to connect with a cross from the left.

The result takes Ghana second in Group H on three points, with South Korea on just one point after their opening 0-0 draw against Uruguay. The Koreans face a do-or-die final group stage game against Portugal on Saturday morning, knowing only a win gives them any chance of qualifying.

In other action, Brazil booked their spot in the round of 16 with one group game to spare after edging Switzerland 1-0 in a tense and tight affair. Midfielder Casemiro lashed home the only goal of the game with a sumptuous drive into the top corner late in the second half to make it two wins from two for Tite's men.

Meanwhile, Cameroon's Vincent Aboubakar came off the bench to rescue the Indomitable Lions by scoring one superb goal and creating another as they fought back to draw 3-3 with Serbia. The result in Doha kept both sides' slim chances alive at the World Cup.

Each have one point and need to win their final Group G games on Friday to stand a chance of going through to the knockout stages. Cameroon face already-qualified Brazil while Serbia take on Switzerland, who have three points.
