Ex-Florida State wide receiver Tamorrion Terry charged with murder in 2018 shooting
Former Florida State wide receiver Tamorrion Terry is one of 11 people indicted on felony murder charges as part of an investigation into a 2018 shooting.
Seven people were shot outside of a nightclub in Ashburn, Georgia, on June 30, 2018. A 21-year-old woman named Za'Quavia Smith was killed in the shooting. Smith was transported to a local hospital after the shooting and died hours later.
A man was arrested and charged with murder not long after the shooting occurred. But police had been looking for more suspects. And according to court documents obtained by the Miami Herald, Terry and nine others were indicted on murder charges last week. Terry was a member of the Florida State football team at the time of the shooting.
Days later, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrested Jontavious Coley and charged the then-17 year-old with felony murder and aggravated assault. Police at the time said that Coley was one of several people who fired multiple rounds into a crowd trying to flee the club.
“Basically, it boils down to they’re wearing one color, this other gang is wearing another color,” Ashburn police Major Richard Purvis told reporters in the early days of the investigation. “They’re, in technical terms or street language, they’re beefing. But it put all these other people in danger.”
The shooting happened at a nightclub event that had been billed as "County vs. County." A reported 150-200 people were in attendance at the event and police said when they arrived they found shooting victims wounded in the parking lot.
Terry declared for the NFL draft after the 2020 college football season and went undrafted. He was signed by the Seattle Seahawks after the draft but was waived on Wednesday with a non-injury designation.
The shooting occurred the summer before Terry's redshirt freshman season with Florida State. Terry played in 12 games in 2018 and had 35 catches for 744 yards and eight touchdowns. He had 60 catches for 1,188 yards and nine TDs in his redshirt sophomore season and struggled in 2020 as Florida State’s first season with coach Mike Norvell didn’t go well. Terry had 23 catches for 289 yards and a TD in six games a season ago.
